The Living Donor Program at UHN's Ajmera Transplant Centre conducts approximately 70 transplants involving living donors every year and 30 to 40 per cent of them are in liver cancer patients. It is one of the largest programs in the world doing this and outcomes are improving. Read more here:

Dr. Mark Cattral preformed the University Health Network’s 1000th living donor liver transplant (LDLT) this spring. Professor Cattral, alongside Dr. Paul Greig, (Professor Emeritus and former Toronto Fellowship Director), performed the first LDLT in Canada 25 years ago. Toronto HPB and Transplant Fellowships Director, Dr. Trevor Reichman, presented three keynote lectures at the Royal Australasian College of Surgeon’s 89th Annual Scientific Congress, taking place virtually this week. His presentations provided North American perspectives on post-transplant and NASH, as well as pediatric liver allocation. A team of surgeons led by Dr. Blayne Amir Sayed at Toronto’s SickKids Hospital successfully removed a basketball-sized tumour from six-month old baby Felix in February. The cancerous tumour, considered inoperable by some, took 8 hours to remove. Baby Felix is now back home in Winnipeg undergoing treatment, and thriving against all odds.
