What is a forest kindergarten??? 🌳

1. An Early Childhood Education Model

🐿 Forest kindergarten is an early childhood education model which emphasizes nature immersion, child-led exploration, and unstructured outdoor play time. Children tend to be outside for 50 to 100% of each day.

🐞Forest kindergartens are often described as “kindergartens without walls” and “Rain or Shine schools.”

2. A “Less is More” Approach to Learning

🌳 Forest kindergartens tend to take place in undisturbed, “wild” settings. This differs from school-based kindergartens where outdoor time is usually spent in conventional playground settings: picture enclosed fences, stationary climbing equipment, and primarily plastic and metal toys.

🐝 Proponents of nature-based education see forest kindergartens as a necessary antidote to physical inactivity and excess screen time.

🦅 Research has shown that participation in forest school can lead to improvement in the areas of fine and gross motor skills, physical fitness and stamina, as well as self-confidence and self-esteem.

3. An Indigenous Way of Knowing and Being

🐢 Many forest kindergartens have adopted a philosophy of education that is partially informed by land-based Indigenous worldview. In land-based pedagogy, land is understood to be a dynamic, animate “teacher” that the children can learn from.

If you would like to learn more about our September to June full-day forest kindergarten program, RSVP for one of our upcoming open houses on April 15 or 16 🌷 We look forward to meeting you and your family soon!

Be well, be playful, and try to find a moment outside today wherever you are!

Did you know that the Toronto Islands residential area is the largest car-free neighbourhood in North America? 🚲

The Toronto Islands is one of only two car-free communities in all of Canada (the other being the more remote Harrington Island in Quebec).

Motorized vehicles are only permitted on the Islands for special deliveries, maintenance, and emergency service providers. Residents are not allowed to keep their personal cars here, so you won’t find any driveways!

In the absence of cars, visitors often note how quiet and calming the Islands are. The air feels fresher without car exhaust, migrating songbirds can be heard around every corner, and wild animals like mink and beavers can comfortably build their homes here.

The Islands are a great place for children to learn to ride bicycles. Many a ball game of four square has been played on its wide open sidewalks. Seniors who wish to remain active, find the lack of traffic contributes to greater ease of movement and a sense of safety.

The Islands’ bike and pedestrian culture lends itself to many a wonderful curbside chat, and to that close-knit feeling that you get in a place where community members of all ages smile and say hello to each other when they cross paths on the street.

At AIFK, we are currently researching cargo bikes for our full-day kindergarten program, including . Having a ferry as a school bus is another pretty unique feature of our program ⛴

If you would like to watch a video about Toronto Island bicycle and pedeastriam culture, you can check out an incredible short documentary by titled “The Only Car Free Neighbourhood in Canada (and why you can’t live there)” on YouTube.

What seasonal celebrations do you look forward to in the spring? 🌸🌸🌸

At AIFK, there are several special events that take place as part of our September to June full-day kindergarten’s seasonal rhythms. In spring, participating children and their families come together on the Island for a gardening day. With rakes, trowels, and the hopeful atmosphere that pervades springtime, we assist the garden in waking up from its winter slumber. 🌝😴🌞

At our most recently parent and child playgroup, we made rabbits, birds, and trees with some homemade, plant-dyed play dough. The children enjoyed using the clay sculpting tools to add their own unique flair to each creation.

Next weekend will bring the Easter holiday for those who celebrate! Do you have any Easter traditions? Let us know in the comments.

Be well, be playful, and try to find a moment to be outside today wherever you are!

What birds have you spotted since the arrival of spring? 🐤🦆🦉🦅🐦

Here on the Toronto Islands, the red winged blackbirds are really the stars of the show. But chickadees, robins, sparrows, blue jays, starlings, cardinals, and hawks can also be seen building their nests with twigs and dried leaves. 🍃

In a few weeks time the tulips, daffodils, and hyacinths will be in full bloom! 🌷🌷🌷

Be well, be playful, and try to find a moment to be outside today wherever you are!

Warmly,
AIFK

While AIFK kindergarteners spend the vast majority of their day outside in nature, the home-based portion of our September to June full-day kindergarten program takes place in our indoor space.

Our indoor playroom is full of natural light and opened ended playthings. Wooden blocks, play silks, handmade toys, and collected nature items are kept in straw baskets and on shelves. There is a wide assortment of art materials including clay for sculpting, watercolors for painting, beeswax crayons for drawing, yarn for weaving, and so forth. Many of these items were sourced from and in Ontario, and Head Hands Heart Boutique in Quebec!

Playthings, art, and learning materials have been carefully chosen for their heirloom quality and sustainability. We strive to a low waste and minimal plastic environment. Our indoor space features no electronic toys, devices, or screens.

Come see our playroom for yourself at one of our upcoming open houses: April 8, 9, 15, and 16. Our full-day kindergarten is designed for children ages 3.5 to 5, and participating children spend 50 to 100% of each day outdoors.
