Tips for Chaturunga in Ashtanga Yoga

❌bring the body straight down, this will bring the elbows too far back
☑️ instead, think of bringing the body forward AND down so that you are able to stack the elbows above the wrists

❌ all the palms of the hands to lift at any point
☑️ keep the hands flat

🎬Clip from our latest YouTube tutorial, a deep dive into Yoga Butt.

Here helps demonstrate why we cue tucking the pelvis (versus arching) while the back is neutral not rounded.

The Ashtanga primary series has a ton of forward folds. Many practices do. This injury can even develop from behavioural lifestyle movements so - there are many opportunities to develop yoga butt if we are not mindful.

HOW TO DO CHAKRASANA VINYASA 🔄
(aka the backward roll in Ashtanga)
Clip from this week’s YouTube tutorial

This can look intimidating—rolling over the neck can seem scary.

Fun Fact: the neck stays relaxed.

The real work comes from your arms, momentum, and a controlled release.

Here we specifically look at the arms. The hand placement and alignment of the elbows.

In the full tutorial we cover:
• Proper setup: fingers turned out, elbows over wrists, neck relaxed (this is your safety foundation)
• 3 progressions: from a modified roll → to downward dog → to the full expression landing in chaturanga
• Key technique: rock for momentum, squeeze legs together to stay centered, and let your feet travel back (don’t glue them down)

Try it out & take your time with it—this is a skill, not a race!

NEW on YouTube 🎥

This is NOT part of our practice in Ashtanga but it has been a HIGHLY requested tutorial - so here it is!

“Master the tripod ➝ crow transition
(Sirsasana → Bakasana)”

We break it down:
• Feet together = inner thighs + deep core ON
• Shin angle that locks in (no more slipping)
• The exact weight shift: head → back → hands → lift
• Why rounding your spine changes everything
• Bent-arm to straight-arm progression
• + a one-leg variation (Eka Pada Bakasana B)
