As members of Canada’s food community, the food that we all grow and consume is related to the social, cultural, and relational aspects of community and identity. Whether we actively recognize it or not, our food links to our individual and collective community- and land-based identities. To learn more about the role of food in our future identities, check out our new report: Visions of the Food System to Come: Food System to Come: Agriculture, Eating and Ecological Justice in 2050 and help contribute to the conversation!

In Feeding the City’s newest report, we explore our individual and collective relationships to food. In recent years, we have seen the rise of diet cultures, many of which promote monotonous, universalized approaches to eating that disregard cultural practices related to food. We recognize that each person has a different relationship to the food that they grow or consume. As such, we should not focus our collective energies on promoting a universalized diet. Rather, we must work to ensure that individuals and communities have equitable access to fresh, culturally significant foods.

In Feeding the City’s newest report, we emphasize the importance of building up social economies across Canada. They would strengthen urban-rural relations, including connections between food producers and consumers, while supporting the rise of alternative food networks. To learn more about the role of social economies in our future food system, check out our new report: Visions of the Food System to Come: Food System to Come: Agriculture, Eating and Ecological Justice in 2050 and help contribute to the conversation!

In Feeding the City’s newest report, we set forth our vision for a socially just, equitable food system in Canada. Our vision cannot be attained until migrant agricultural workers are granted the same rights as their Canadian counterparts. Migrant agricultural workers are integral to the Canadian food system and must no longer be exposed to unjust treatment on behalf of the Canadian government.

To ensure a just transition in the food system, we must align our efforts to champion social, economic, political, and environmental justice for all. Doing so will support the self-determination and decision-making power of our food communities. To learn more about the just transition in our future food system, check out our new report: Visions of the Food System to Come: Agriculture, Eating and Ecological Justice in 2050 and help contribute to the conversation!

In Feeding the City’s newest report, we set forth various actions that must be undertaken to transform our food system into one that promotes democratic, inclusive governance. In order to achieve this system of governance, all those belonging to Canada’s food community – farmers and eaters alike – must place pressure on the corporations and government bodies that seek to dominate the food system.
