Should bringing an iced coffee to a job interview really matter?

A recent debate about jobseekers arriving at interviews with iced coffee in hand has sparked a larger conversation about professionalism, workplace culture and the signals candidates send during an interview.

CERIC Board Chair Keka DasGupta joined guest host Jim Richards on The Deb Hutton Show to share her perspective, drawing on 15 years of experience in recruiting.

Rather than focusing on the coffee itself, Keka suggests looking at the bigger picture:

1. Know the workplace culture. What feels completely normal in a casual, creative organization may be perceived differently in a more traditional environment.

2. Be aware of the signals you send. Researching an organization and understanding its culture can help demonstrate preparation, initiative and genuine interest in the opportunity.

3. Employers should look beyond small missteps. If a candidate has the right qualifications but misses an unwritten cultural cue, is that enough to count them out? It may be an opportunity for conversation rather than judgment.

As workplace norms continue to evolve, perhaps the question isn’t simply “Should you bring an iced coffee?” but “What are we really evaluating when we make that judgment?”

CERIC Board Member Candy Ho joined Shane Hewitt and the Night Shift to discuss how employers, educators, families and other trusted adults can support young people as they navigate their first jobs and career decisions.

As youth unemployment continues to be a concern, early work experiences can play an important role in helping young people build transferable skills, confidence and an understanding of the world of work.

From recognizing the skills youth already develop through school and everyday experiences to creating opportunities for mentorship and meaningful career conversations, Candy emphasizes the importance of being supportive, realistic and optimistic when helping young people explore what comes next.

Youth unemployment in Canada has reached 12.9% – so what can students and new graduates do to stand out in today's challenging job market? CERIC Board Chair Keka DasGupta joined AM800 CKLW to share practical advice for young jobseekers moving from school to work. Three key takeaways:

1. Your experience counts for more than you think. Volunteering, summer jobs and early roles, such as working in a daycare, all build real skills. The first step is recognizing them.

2. Translate those skills into what employers want. Volunteer and part-time work develop the communication, negotiation and writing skills employers look for. Name them clearly in your resume, cover letter and interviews.

3. Seek support from career development professionals. You don't have to face the job market alone. School counsellors, post-secondary career centres and alumni services can help you set direction and find opportunities.
