BT Global Access joins the community in mourning the passing of Maryam Muritala, founder of CanadaVendors and the Canada Business Forum, and a dedicated event planner for the Canada-Africa Youth Education Forum (CAYEF).

Maryam was a visionary Nigerian-Canadian entrepreneur and community builder who spent her career helping businesses become visible, connected and supported. Through CanadaVendors, the Canada Business Forum, and platforms like it, she gave entrepreneurs — especially newcomers and underrepresented founders — a place to grow, connect, and be recognized.

That same spirit of care shaped her work with CAYEF, where she helped build a space for students, educators, and the diaspora to come together around shared opportunity. Her impact reached hundreds of entrepreneurs and young people across Canada, Africa, and the diaspora, and it will continue through everyone she supported along the way.

Our heartfelt condolences go out to her family, friends, and everyone who knew and worked with her. Rest in peace, Maryam. Your impact will not be forgotten. 💚

Current IRCC processing times for a study permit, updated as of today 🇨🇦

Processing times shift regularly based on application volume and country, so it’s worth checking before you apply — not just going off what you saw a few months ago.

Note: IRCC hasn’t published a current estimate for Sierra Leone. We always recommend applying as early as possible regardless of your country.

New semester, new habits 🎒

The rush of week one is almost over — now's when the small stuff actually starts to matter.
Show up to office hours even when you don't need help (professors remember the students who do). Join a club before your schedule fills up. Find your international student office before you actually need it, not during a crisis. And get your deadlines mapped out now, before week 3 sneaks up on you.

None of this is complicated — it's just easy to skip when you're settling in. Future you will be glad you didn't.

Today marks the first day back for thousands of international students across Canada

Whether this is your very first semester or you're returning for another year — welcome, and good luck! This moment is the result of a lot of work: applications, documents, waiting, and probably a little nervous energy too.

IRCC just raised the study permit proof of funds requirement and if your application is still in progress, this affects you.

As of September 1, 2026, a single applicant outside Quebec must show at least $23,448 CAD in living expenses (up from $22,895). This is separate from tuition and travel costs — once you add those in, most students need well above $40,000 CAD total to meet the full financial requirement.

IRCC also updated what counts as acceptable proof of funds this year: pension income and rental property income are now accepted, while convertible bank drafts are no longer on the list.

With financial documentation already one of the top reasons study permits get refused, getting this right matters more than ever. We help students figure out exactly what they need and how to document it properly.
