Perimenopause nutrition doesn’t need a new “superfood” every week. The basics do a lot of the heavy lifting: enough protein, calcium, fibre, plant variety and heart-healthy fats.

5 foods I recommend often:
🥣 Greek yogurt or skyr — an easy way to add protein + calcium for muscle and bone support.
🌱 Tofu or edamame — protein plus soy isoflavones in a versatile everyday option.
🫘 Beans or lentils — fibre + plant protein to support fullness and heart health.
🫐 Berries — a simple way to add fibre, polyphenols and more plant variety.
🫒 Extra-virgin olive oil — an easy unsaturated-fat swap for cooking, dressings and finishing meals.

None of these foods “balance your hormones” on their own — and you do not need a perfect diet. Think of them as practical building blocks you can mix into meals you already enjoy.

Save this for your next grocery trip, and follow for practical, evidence-based perimenopause nutrition.

Why are there still so many unanswered questions about menopause?

A new Canadian analysis looked at 10,629 CIHR grants over 15 years and found that only about 6.4% of the funding examined went to female-specific research questions.

The gap across different life stages was especially striking:

252 grants mentioned pregnancy
16 mentioned postmenopause
4 mentioned perimenopause
3 mentioned menstrual cycles

Pregnancy research is incredibly important — but women’s health doesn’t begin and end with reproduction.

Perimenopause, menopause and postmenopause can span decades of a woman’s life, yet many of the questions women ask about symptoms, nutrition, metabolism, body composition and long-term health still don’t have the depth of menopause-specific research we’d like.

That doesn’t mean there’s no evidence for menopause care.

It means we need more of it.

More research. More investment. And more attention to women’s health across the entire lifespan.

Save + share to help bring attention to the research gap.

Celiac disease can affect nutrient absorption, especially before diagnosis.

Five nutrients worth knowing about:
• Iron — for energy — found in beef, lentils
• Calcium — for bone health — found in dairy, fortified milk
• Vitamin D — for immune function — found in fatty fish
• Folate — for cell repair — found in beans, leafy greens
• Vitamin B12 — for nerve function — found in meat, dairy

Try this: speak with your healthcare provider about whether follow-up bloodwork may be appropriate, and focus on including nutrient-rich foods regularly.

Have you had these levels checked since your diagnosis? If it's been a while, it might be worth asking at your next appointment.

Many people keep having symptoms not because of what they're choosing to eat — but because of accidental exposure they don't even know is happening.

The most common sources I see:
• Toasters
• Cutting boards
• Shared condiments and butter containers
• Shared cooking surfaces and utensils

Try this: identify a few high-risk areas in your kitchen and create dedicated gluten-free spaces or equipment where possible — your own toaster (or toaster bags), your own cutting board, and squeeze bottles instead of shared jars for condiments.

Which of these did you not think about until after your diagnosis? Tell me below — it might help someone else in your house too.

One of the easiest ways to make breakfast or a snack more satisfying in perimenopause is to pair protein + fibre.

Try this 5-minute bowl:
• ¾ cup plain Greek yogurt
• ½ cup berries
• 1 tbsp chia seeds
• 1–2 tbsp pumpkin seeds or h**p hearts
• Cinnamon
• Optional: small drizzle of maple syrup

It gives you protein, fibre, calcium and unsaturated fats in one very simple combination — and you can adjust the portions to your appetite and needs.

Save this for a busy morning or an easy afternoon snack.

So much of the nutrition advice floating around about menopause is outdated, incomplete, or just plain wrong. Let's clear a few things up:

MYTH: Carbs should be avoided after 40. FACT: Fibre-rich carbs support gut health, energy, hormone metabolism, and overall nutrition quality. They're not the enemy.

MYTH: You need to eat less to avoid weight gain. FACT: Focusing on protein, fibre, meal quality, and strength-building habits is usually far more effective than just eating less.

MYTH: It's normal to lose muscle as you age, so there's not much you can do. FACT: Some muscle loss is common, but strength training plus adequate protein can help you preserve — and even build — muscle during midlife.

MYTH: Lifting weights will make you bulky. FACT: Strength training is one of the best tools you have for muscle, metabolism, bone health, and healthy aging.

MYTH: Supplements can replace healthy eating. FACT: Supplements can help fill gaps, but they can't replace what a balanced dietary pattern does for your body.

MYTH: One diet works for every woman. FACT: Your nutrition needs depend on your symptoms, medical history, lifestyle, preferences, and goals. There's no universal plan.

Which of these did you used to believe? Tell me below — I bet you're not the only one 👇
