I’m currently listening to Matthew McConaughey’s memoir Greenlights during my commute. I love to read (ideally a hardcover) but I have to say in this instance listening to the audiobook is the superior experience – his voice, his manner of speaking, and his energy are incredible. But I digress.
In his memoir, McConaughey speaks about betting on himself again and again in his life and his career. This has had me reflecting on my own career and I realized that I too owe my success to the fact that I have bet on myself time and time again.
I knew when I left my role at my first law firm job that this “ending” was going to mean something for me. I was determined to move onto something bigger, better, and more rewarding. If I was going to make a change, it was going to be a BIG one. I wasn’t afraid to invest in myself and this gave me the confidence to pursue my goals and dreams.
While there may be uncertainties in any move, your ability to trust yourself and your capabilities will fuel your determination to overcome challenges and seize new opportunities. This was certainly true for me.
I invested time in learning, reading relevant industry materials and obtaining a relevant certification in Entertainment Law through Osgoode Professional Development.
I invested time in speaking to industry leaders, attending events and reaching out to new mentors on LinkedIn.
I invested time in my mindset and mental health, logging a lot of time on the Insight Timer meditation app.
And I invested time in volunteering, gaining industry experience to develop myself on my way to that legal experience.
In investing in myself I bet on myself. And in doing so I knew wasn’t gambling, I was making the safe bet - ME.

I learned to ski as a teen, when I was sufficiently afraid of heights and understood the impact of gravity. My partner learned to ski as a tot and has no memory of not knowing how to ski.
I’ve been thinking a lot lately about how embarking on the thrilling journey of learning to ski later in life mirrors the challenges of navigating a new career path. Just as conquering the slopes demands resilience, patience, and a willingness to embrace the unknown, so too does navigating the complexities of professional growth.
With each graceful turn and calculated move on the snow, one learns the importance of adaptability, strategic planning, and the exhilarating reward that comes from pushing one’s boundaries.
The slopes of life and career share a common principle: the pursuit of mastery through persistent effort and a fearless pursuit of progression.
Cheers to the Après!

A question I hear a lot from new lawyers and aspiring lawyers I mentor: “How do I get experience when I don’t have experience?”
The answer might surprise you.
Volunteer work.
It’s a simple yet powerful solution to the age-old dilemma that the only experience that matters is doing the exact same thing you want to get a job doing. This belief is a fiction that can keep you from achieving your dreams.
So, what does volunteer work look like for a lawyer? It looks like:
⭐️Volunteering at a legal clinic like Pro Bono Ontario in your desired area of law.
⭐️Volunteering with an industry-specific legal organization like Artists’ Legal Advice Services, helping to plan events.
⭐️Taking on non-legal roles in your desired industry, such as working at venues like Factory Theatre or Crow’s Theatre.
⭐️Joining the board of directors of an organization that aligns with your career aspirations. For those interested in entertainment law, consider arts organizations; for those pursuing business law, explore business-focused organizations, and so on.
⭐️Volunteering at industry-specific conferences like Canadian Music Week, where you can immerse yourself in your passion and network with the experts.
The possibilities are endless. Each of these opportunities played a crucial role in my journey when I was working towards transitioning from insurance law to entertainment law. Feel free to explore my LinkedIn profile to see my experiences and the diverse skills I’ve gained through volunteering.

Being resourceful is a character trait that is highly valued. We are impressed by and respect people we see as resourceful.
Why? Because resourceful people don’t wait for opportunities, they create opportunities. They are problem solvers. They find solutions.
How do you nurture this trait? Easy. To become resourceful, you must (1) seek out resources, and then (2) use and take advantage of those resources! That’s all!
