🇨🇦 Things to know about studying in Canada

1. Culture
People are actually nice. They’ll smile, say “sorry,” hold doors, it’s part of everyday life. At first it might feel distant or even fake if you’re not used to it, but over time you realize it’s just how people respect each other’s space. Friendliness doesn’t always mean closeness though. Building deeper relationships takes time and effort.

2. Academic workload
It’s not necessarily harder, but it’s very different. There’s a lot more independence. No one is chasing you for deadlines. You’re expected to manage your time, keep up with weekly assignments, and participate. It’s more about consistency than last minute studying.

3. Working and studying
Balancing both is exhausting, especially at the beginning. You’re learning how to manage your energy, not just your time. But it forces you to become more organized, responsible, and realistic about what you can handle. A lot of personal growth comes from this phase. And it greatly helps you with a job search after graduation.

4. Friends
It’s easy to stay around people from your own country because it feels comfortable. But if you do only that, your experience becomes very limited. When you start connecting with people from different cultures, your perspective shifts. Not instantly, but gradually.

5. Campus support
There’s actually a lot available. Career help, mental health services, workshops, networking events. The difference is no one pushes you to use it. You have to take initiative, book appointments, and show up. Once you do, it can make a big difference.

6. Housing
This can be one of the most stressful parts. Prices are high, competition is real, and what you see online isn’t always what you get. You might need to compromise at first. Location, roommates, budget. Planning early helps, but flexibility matters more.

7. Yourself
You change without really noticing it. Your habits, your mindset, your expectations. You become more independent, but also more aware of your limits. It’s not always comfortable, but it shapes you in a way staying in one place never would.
