We spent the evening celebrating and with where we engaged in learning and unlearning about Afro-Latinx history and culture.

We are grateful for the opportunity and look forward to continuing the conversation.

To all the first year educators - you got this!

One of our favourite quotes that we take with us whenever we are stepping out of our comfort zones, taking on new endeavors and/or leveling up! We can sometimes talk ourselves out of opportunities that we worked so hard to prepare for! Being an educator will certainly have its ups and downs but you earned your right to be here. Dedicate yourself to learning, unlearning and relearning and always remind yourself that YOU GOT THIS.

Since forever-Hip-hop- like many of the experiences of Black and Brown youth in education have been marginalized for existing outside of traditional school norms.
β˜†
Challenge this by incorporating Hip-hop into the curriculum.
β˜†
1) Validate student experiences as classroom resources and encourage students to share their thoughts, feelings and inate geniuses in creative ways.
β˜†
2) Introduce students to the different Hip-hop elements, such as poetry or rap, breakdancing, beat boxing and emceeing.
β˜†
3) Pull from these knowledge forms and be ready to learn from your students as they write, discuss, listen and learn from each other.
β˜†
REMEMBERβ–ͺ︎ all educators can work with students to co-create a community of learners that look out for each other and work creatively to challenge traditional notions of who is successful and who is not πŸ–€πŸ“šπŸ‘©πŸΏβ€βš–οΈ
β˜†
Who's ready to disrupt the idea that Hip-hop not only exists outside of the classroom, but is ACTUALLY INSIDE OF THE CLASSROOM ALREADY!??

To teach about freedom requires us to practice being free. Living your truth and being unapologetically yourself gives students permission to do the same πŸ–€πŸ‘‘.

Check out this creative gem on cultural appropriation at a time where giving back to Black people has never been more necessary. This book poses one of today's relevant questions: "What would America be like if we loved Black people as much as we love Black culture?" πŸ€”πŸ‘©πŸΏβ€βš–οΈπŸ‘¨πŸΎβ€βš–οΈ
