Abstract:
This talk will focus on conducting research on various aspects of Iranian history. From locating manuscripts, governmental documents, and photographs to conducting oral interviews and recovering material objects, I will focus on how some historians try to explain the past. At the same time, I will highlight the importance of acknowledging silences and biases in existing sources, and what can be done to address lacunae. Finally, I will discuss the process by which researchers slowly begin to create personal archives of their own through their research and works-in-progress.

Bio:
Firoozeh Kashani-Sabet is Walter H. Annenberg Professor of History at the University of Pennsylvania. She is currently finishing her next book, “Tales of Trespassing: Borderland Histories of Iran, Iraq, and the Persian Gulf.” Kashani-Sabet has also written fiction and is completing her second novel, “Ghosts of Guilan.”
