Christmas is around the corner! Our toddlers had so much fun with the white snow during outdoor play. They decorated their own snowman (雪人) and played a little skiing game (滑雪) that helped to enhance their eye-hand coordination skills.

Our kids were interested in talking about different food they love during snack time. Ms. Claire took the opportunity to create some activities based on the topic of food. First, she introduced some Chinese vocabulary that are related to different kinds of food such as “苹果”、“米饭”、“鸡蛋”、“肉” and “面包”etc. After that, they had to sort the food according to the category of solid food for "吃” or liquid for “喝”. Then, they used the words "喜欢” and “不喜欢” to create simple sentences such as “我喜欢吃苹果” and “我不喜欢喝果汁”.

Last week, our kids learnt the Chinese characters: 车、船 (car & boat). For better memorization, they used loose parts to build their own interpretation. In this activity, loose parts play helped them to develop creative and critical thinking skills. It encouraged them to use their own imagination and freely express their ideas. To incorporate with Mandarin learning, they could identify that Chinese characters are created by strokes and practiced it in a fun way.

Montessori teaches Math in a hands-on fashion and in order of concrete to abstract. This activity helped our kids to associate quantities with numbers, introduced them to the decimal system and showed them that single units can be combined to produce various quantities.

A hands-on activity was developed to make the concept of direction visible and easy for children to conceive. Our children from the after-school program first identified the relative position of the chosen fruit, picked out the correct Mandarin word that indicates the position between two fruits. They were able to adopt and understand the Mandarin words of directions and different kinds of fruits efficiently.

Our kindergarten kids learnt about emotions in Mandarin. We discussed about different feelings through different creative activities such as arts & crafts, Montessori learning and music & movements. They also enjoyed doing role-plays to learn how to express their feelings.
