CIARS in Conversation: Institutional Racial Habitus and the Schooling of African-Heritage Students in Australia

Dear Community Members,

The Centre for Integrative Anti-Racism Studies (CIARS) is pleased to welcome Dr. Tebeje Molla for a special CIARS in Conversation presentation on race, schooling, and the educational experiences of African-heritage students in Australia.

Drawing on a national research project, Dr. Molla examines a striking disconnect between how racism is understood by school staff and how it is experienced by students and their families. While educators often describe schools as inclusive and non-racist spaces, students and parents report experiences of racism through negative curricular representations, lowered expectations, discriminatory tracking, and racialized disciplinary practices. Attendees will be invited to reflect on what meaningful institutional change requires, including a willingness to confront uncomfortable realities and reconsider the assumptions and practices that influence who is recognized as belonging within educational spaces.

Join us for this thought-provoking conversation and opportunity to engage with the work of a leading scholar examining race, education, and social justice in contemporary schooling.

Date: Monday, June 8th
Time: 12pm – 1pm
Location: Zoom: https://yorku.zoom.us/j/5321658492

We look forward to welcoming you.

Dr Tebeje Molla is an ARC Future Fellow and Associate Professor in the School of Education at Deakin University, Australia. His research centres on educational disadvantage and policy responses at systemic, sectoral, and institutional levels. His recent work examines the educational experiences and attainment of African heritage Australian youth from refugee backgrounds. Dr. Molla's interdisciplinary research draws on critical sociology and the capability approach to social justice and human development. Among his notable publications are Higher Education in Ethiopia (2018, Springer), African Heritage Australian Youth (2023, Routledge), and Understanding Educational Disadvantage (in press, Bloomsbury).

Hello everyone,

Hope you are doing well, taking good care.

Today's (Thursday) meditation is good self care, physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. It calls on our highest consciousness, where we connect to hope, security, possibility, blessing, balance, awareness, healing, love, and compassion. It helps us to put "feet to prayer" as we would say in the South. It helps to heal and increase healthy activity of the vagus nervous and parasympathetic nervous system, keys for being able to rest, to calm oneself when dealing with stress, for healthy digestion, blood pressure and cognitive function, among other things.

Hello everyone,

Hope you are doing well, taking good care.

Today's meditation is to develop your intuition and strength in your excellence. We are working with the arc line, tenth body, sixth and third chakras. When you concentration and meditate, you develop your nervous system and your intuitive sense. When you bring discipline, rhythm and repetition in your meditation, you create the adjustment and vibration to carry that discipline and rhythm into your life. When you engage at the navel centre, you direct your energy consciously. We make conscious choices about what to feed and what to let go in our lives.

Hello everyone,

Hope you are doing well, taking good care.

Today we will be doing the Adi Shakti meditation, accessing awareness, strength, creativity, intuition, and grace that is the feminine energy of the Universe, within and among all of us. In our practice, we call on the divine and eternal truth and wisdom that we experience in our silence and inner strength, where there is no unknown.

There is a balance and integration of masculine and feminine energies in all of us, just like the connection and collaboration between the sun and Earth. It's not a polarity or a division. It's balancing consistency and creativity, integrating power and grace, shining the light and manifesting abundance in our human experience, knowing when to hold and when to let go.

Being a mother was never supposed to be an individual job, never about having a certain anatomy, never about permission and place in a hierarchy. Never about division, exclusion or duality. It was about collective care for the young, elderly, sick, and vulnerable. It was about shared leadership in community with support, creativity, nurturing, and growth for all, especially at the beginning and ending of life. It was about valuing and honouring the connection to the earth, to the universe, to our source of life and creativity, to our collective consciousness. It was about the many ways people and groups embodied and expressed the sacredness of all life and Love of the earth, moon, sun, cosmos, and Infinite. It was a circle of love, wisdom, shared responsibility, collaboration, courage, and generosity.

And in this spirit of divine feminine energy, truth, courage, love, and community, let's remember that there is no such thing as "other people's children."

Let's do some work!

Hello everyone,

Hope you are doing well, taking good care.

Today's meditation is Wahe Guru, Wahe Jio. It's an uplifting meditation that transcends the physical and connects us with the consciousness of the cosmos. It's like saying "Hallelujah!" and experiencing the bliss of oneness with all, in your highest consciousness. Because change and healing can be joyful, uplifting. Pain and challenge are part of the human experience, but suffering is not meant to be. Happiness and pleasure are important. Wonder, curiosity, discovery, and innocence. We can let go of beliefs that if we are not working hard, suffering, grinding, experiencing pain that we are not healing or deserving of success. We can make a decision with every breath to be our true self, and trust that our life is in divine order. Consciousness is a decision. Moment to moment. We make that decision. When we live consciously, we don't create harm or suffering for ourselves or others.

Hello everyone,

Hope you are doing well, taking good care.

For Thursday's meditation, we are highlighting the heart chakra and the electromagnetic field, as well as strengthening the first and second bodies with a sound vibration of truth. As you get the energy circulating at the heart centre, you align your being and projection with love and compassion, with a connection to the Infinite within you and in all living beings. When we project from this place of love and add Sat Nam, we clear and expand our aura, aligned with our true selves, instead of being susceptible to negativity and pressures around us. We are "doers of truth."

Hello everyone,

Hope you are doing well, taking good care.

Outer peace, world peace does not truly exist without inner peace, without a change in individuals' and collective consciousness to vibrate with the truth of the Universe, which is Love is who we are. Love is what uplifts us, heals us and connects us. Love is what makes the impossible possible. And love requires courage. Courage to look within, to accept, to change, to heal, to grow. The light of the truth shines in our hearts, and we can then shine that light of truth all around us to see the world as it truly is, to see others as they truly are, to revere all life as sacred. Let's do this healing work, bravely, gracefully, humbly, and together.

SJE/OISE Meditation Class
Hello everyone,

Hope you are doing well, taking good care.

We have been doing a mini series of healing meditations in preparation for today. We did Kirtan Kriya to let go of old patterns that no longer serve us and to make new mental pathways towards our highest and most creative expression. We did Ra Ma Da Sa to change our consciousness, to experience the power of our Infinite Self in every breath and sound. And today, we are doing Gan Pattee, which combines those two mantras to make the impossible possible. And before you think, well, that's not possible, women and girls, known and unknown, in spite of all odds and forms of oppression, have been making the impossible possible every day. We stand on the shoulders of those who bravely, beautifully, creatively, collectively, came before us. And today, we stand together, showing our strength, grace, courage, excellence, brilliance, compassion, and generosity, to inspire each other, support each other, love, honour and respect each other. And we light and pave the way with hope, joy, commitment, and an indomitable spirit for the children of tomorrow. Wahe Guru!

Pare-Recorded THU 12 March 2026

Pre-recorded: SJE/OISE Meditation Class - Peace and Healing
Hello everyone,

Hope you are doing well, taking good care.

Today's is a travel days for me, so class is pre-recorded here for you. You may use this link at any time. It's not temporary. As always, the space is held for you individually and collectively.

This meditation is the Ra Ma Da Sa meditation for peace and healing. For each person, who chooses peace, compassion, courage, and truth, it helps transform the collective consciousness, to bring about healing for the planet and all who inhabit this beautiful and sacred place.

The truth is love is more powerful than fear, compassion is more powerful than hate, and truth is powerful than denial. What vibrates with the truth and energy of the Universe is sustainable, what doesn't is not. But the fear, the disconnect, the denial lives in all of us, in various forms and expressions, so when we come together and consciously choose to work for peace and healing, we find ways in our own lives to have an impact, and our meditation has impact on a global scale that we may never know.

So if you have the privilege and grace to be in a position to meditate for peace and healing, then please join us to do this uplifting and important work. Thank you.

Have an uplifting afternoon!

Hello everyone,

Hope you are doing well, taking good care.

The opposite of Love is not hate. It's fear. Fear makes us small, separates us from our true Self, from the Infinite, from the Earth, and from each other. When we are isolated, we go up and down the spiritual pyramid. We go down to anger, shame and blame. We go up to limited thinking and belief systems. So today, let's heal through Love. We are going to do some beautiful heart chakra work. We are going to go from the smallness and isolation of "me" to abundance, Love, connection, and expansion of "We."
