CIARS in Conversation: Institutional Racial Habitus and the Schooling of African-Heritage Students in Australia
Dear Community Members,
The Centre for Integrative Anti-Racism Studies (CIARS) is pleased to welcome Dr. Tebeje Molla for a special CIARS in Conversation presentation on race, schooling, and the educational experiences of African-heritage students in Australia.
Drawing on a national research project, Dr. Molla examines a striking disconnect between how racism is understood by school staff and how it is experienced by students and their families. While educators often describe schools as inclusive and non-racist spaces, students and parents report experiences of racism through negative curricular representations, lowered expectations, discriminatory tracking, and racialized disciplinary practices. Attendees will be invited to reflect on what meaningful institutional change requires, including a willingness to confront uncomfortable realities and reconsider the assumptions and practices that influence who is recognized as belonging within educational spaces.
Join us for this thought-provoking conversation and opportunity to engage with the work of a leading scholar examining race, education, and social justice in contemporary schooling.
Date: Monday, June 8th
Time: 12pm – 1pm
Location: Zoom: https://yorku.zoom.us/j/5321658492
We look forward to welcoming you.
