Screen Time & Kids π±πΆπ§
Screens are everywhere, and for many families they are part of daily life, and thatβs okay! Research shows that how much and how screens are used matters for child development.
What studies are linking excessive screen time to:
β’ Higher risk of obesity and cardiometabolic concerns
β’ Increased anxiety, low mood, and depression
β’ Unhealthy snacking habits and eating patterns
β’ Delays in speech, attention, and creative play
β’ Strain on childβparent connection
β’ Sleep disruption, eye strain, headaches, and posture issues
Screens can also make it harder for children to read facial expressions, regulate emotions, and manage big feelings.
But not all screen time is bad
Educational shows or learning apps can support development when:
β’ Content is age-appropriate
β’ A caregiver watches or participates with the child
β’ Screens supplement real-life interaction, not replace it
Kids learn best from real people, not screens alone.
Healthy screen habits to try
β’ Read, play, or tell stories together daily
β’ Turn devices off 1 to 2 hours before bedtime
β’ Replace evening screens with bath time, books, or quiet music
β’ Encourage outdoor play and movement breaks every hour
β’ Eat family meals without screens
Model what you want to see
Children copy what adults do.
β’ Put phones away during meals and playtime
β’ Create tech-free zones like bedrooms or the dining table
β’ Use parental controls and set clear, consistent boundaries
Small changes can make a big difference for sleep, mood, focus, and connection.

There are many benefits to mindfulness, although it can be a challenge to make time or find a space for daily mindfulness or meditation. A great option for both children and adults alike is to get outdoors and go on a mindful nature walk. One benefit of cultivating a nature connection is that it can improve psychological functioning. Nature connection is the mindful engagement between humans and nature. In order to be mindful in nature it is important to immerse yourself into your surroundings and put your phone and other possible distractions away. A study by Gotink et al. demonstrated that mindful walking alongside a river improved both mindfulness and positive affect, which further enhanced each other. Planning a family nature walk is a great way to get outdoors, boost physical activity and incorporate mindfulness into your daily routine.
