I’m using hi-hat “pumps” for this groove which involves simultaneously hitting the hat with my right hand, lifting the left foot to open the hats, and hitting the kick with my right foot.

My name is Aleks and I've been playing drums for over 20 years and am currently performing with three bands encompassing styles across rock, pop, funk, jazz, blues, metal, and hip hop.

As a former signed artist, I've recorded five studio albums and preformed on stage over 100 times, as well as trained with world-renowned drummers in Los Angeles, New York, and London.

At York University, I've completed courses in Brazilian samba drumming and Spanish flamenco guitar.

Topics that we will cover during lessons:

Physical Fundamentals - Posture, breathing, grip, efficient hitting, foot technique, injury prevention, stretching, warm-up

Timing - Metronome, gap-click, drum-less tracks, even and odd time signatures, accents, internalizing pulse, rhythmic modulations, rushing and dragging, feel

Independence - hands and feet independence so that they can each play different parts in unison

Musicality - dynamics, feel, composition, playing within a band context, writing drum parts, creativity, unique and recognizable

Practicing - warm-ups, rudiments, effectiveness, goal setting, books, videos, self-directed learning

Having fun - motivation, creativity, soloing, playing with others, exploring different styles and instruments
