I spoke with a brand new business owner yesterday who has been in various different industries (administration, event planning, etc) for years before deciding that she was going to take the step to being an entrepreneur.
She told me she created some graphics for a fellow business owner through Canva and the question of rates comes up (as it always does). She said people doing the same thing charged $25/hr.
Then there was a pause. I stared at her and she stared at me. And then she said, โWell, what do you think? What should I charge?โ
I said, โ$25 an hour.โ
She was taken aback and responded with, โReally? But Iโm new.โ
I chuckled - โBut are you new to Canva?โ
โNo. Iโve been using it for years.โ
โCould she have done it without your help?โ
โNo, she didnโt know what it was.โ
โSo youโre new to running a business. But youโre not new to the skill. Would you go to a doctor who just started a new practice and ask him/her to charge less?" (Btw, this client was in the States)
"Absolutely not!"
"So why would you think you should?"
Moral of the story: Know your worth from the start. Chances are, you decided to start a business because you already know you are talented and have a distinction in what you're doing. Chances are, you are ALREADY an expert. The only step left is showing others what you can do!
