Correcting mistakes is important, but timing matters.

Psycholinguist Willem Levelt’s model of speech production shows that speaking requires us to plan a message, find the words, articulate them and monitor what we are saying, all in real time.

That is already a lot for the brain to manage, especially in a second language.

When learners are interrupted every few seconds, their attention moves away from the message and toward every verb, word and pronunciation choice.

The result is often more hesitation and less confidence.

This is why I use selective correction in my Speaking Improvement classes. I let my students finish their thoughts first. Then we focus on the corrections that will genuinely help them communicate more clearly and confidently.

The goal is not to ignore mistakes. It is to give feedback without stopping the conversation 💬

Last weekend, we went out for ice cream🍦

Two of these wonderful women are my students. And somehow, without planning it, we spent most of the evening speaking English.

And it made me think.

This is what learning a language is really about.

Not waiting until your English is perfect.
Not worrying about every mistake.
Not searching for the perfect word before you speak.

It’s about using the English you have right now to connect.

To laugh. To share stories. To get to know someone. To build friendships. To feel part of a community.

These are creative, talented women building a new chapter of their lives in Canada, and seeing English become part of those connections makes me incredibly happy.

Because fluency isn’t about sounding perfect.

It’s about feeling confident enough to speak, connect and belong 🩵

And sometimes, it starts with a conversation over ice cream.

If you live in Toronto, there’s one pretty clear sign that summer is slowly coming to an end: the CNE is back. 🎡

The Canadian National Exhibition has been part of Toronto summers since 1879. Every year, for a few weeks, the area comes alive with rides, food, music, games and thousands of people enjoying those last summer days.

Think of it as a huge mix of a fair, an amusement park and a summer festival: colourful, busy, a little chaotic… and very Toronto 😊

But one of my favourite things about living in another country is realizing that learning a language goes far beyond knowing the words.

You might know that CNE stands for Canadian National Exhibition.

And then one day you hear:

“Are you going to The Ex this weekend?”

Wait… The Ex?

Yep. The Ex is the CNE 🎡

And I love these little discoveries.

Because learning English is also learning the culture around it — the traditions, the references and the everyday expressions that slowly start making sense when you live here.

And somehow, understanding those little things makes a new place feel a little more like home 🩵

Learning English shouldn’t feel like a test every time you open your mouth.

In my sessions, I won’t interrupt every sentence to correct you or ask you to sound like someone else.

Feedback has a purpose: to help you communicate more clearly without losing your confidence or your voice.

We use grammar when it supports communication, practise real conversations from the beginning and turn what you already know into English you can actually use.

Because fluency isn’t about making zero mistakes. It’s about being able to keep the conversation going. 💬

WTF 😅

Apologizing for your English before you even speak.
Waiting for “perfect grammar.”

New beginnings look a lot like this.

Back to being a student —again—
this time learning French.

Starting a new language as an adult isn’t about speed or perfection.
It’s about curiosity, consistency, and allowing yourself to begin from zero —even when languages have already shaped your life.

English, Portuguese… and now French.
Each one has come with its own challenges, lessons, and growth.

Learning French is reminding me that progress doesn’t come from rushing,
but from showing up, practicing, and trusting the process.
