Sometimes, courage isn't about saving the world.
Sometimes, it's about taking a single step.
About standing up and speaking, even if it seems hard, or terrifying, or like the last thing you'd ever want to do.
Because you have something to say.
And it NEEDS to be heard.

"It's not a difficult thing, unless you decide it's a difficult thing.
Otherwise, it's just the next thing you're figuring out."
You'd be surprised how things change when you look at them that way.

Spontaneously speaking in front of a crowd, which happens during debate, can be scary.
But the more you practice, and the more you debate, the less frightening it all seems.
Practice can happen at home. You can practice speaking in front of family, friends, stuffed animals, legos. You can join online debate sessions. You can join a speech and debate club at school.
If you're in Canada and your school doesn't have one, reach out! We'd love to help you find a good program for your needs! Plus, all our programs and events are free.

Arthur Ashe was the first Black man to win singles titles at Wimbledon, the US Open, and the Australian Open.
He lived his life with intention, was an active civil rights supporter, and began raising awareness for HIV and AIDS after he contracted HIV from a blood transfusion during his heart bypass surgery in 1983.
He knew what it meant to keep going, even when conditions were far from perfect.
And the first step was to begin where you are.
