Ten people are getting into a room they couldn’t afford to be in. Applications close tonight.

Every year someone at the summit tells me they almost didn’t come because the ticket was a stretch. The rooms that move your career usually cost something to get into, and the people who need them most are the ones who can’t justify the spend.

The most important conversations rarely happen on the agenda.

They happen in the hallway. Over coffee. In the five minutes after everyone else has left.

Ask better questions. Stay long enough to listen. Follow up while the conversation still matters. Give value before you ask for anything in return.

Because leadership is not only what happens when you have the room.

It is what you do with the relationship after you leave it.

Nobody remembers slide four of anyone’s deck. They remember the five minutes by the coffee table.

I’ve watched more careers move in hallways than in conference rooms. Four things that actually work:

1. Stay after. The panel gets the applause, but the unstructured twenty minutes afterward is where someone decides to take a chance on you.

2. Ask what someone is working on, not what they do. One question gets you a title. The other gets you a person.

3. Follow up within 48 hours and be specific. Most connections die of silence, and the bar for standing out is lower than people think.

4. Give before you need anything. Send the article, make the introduction. That’s not a tactic, it’s how trust gets built.

Today is the day you are going to do that one thing you've been wanting to do for the longest time. You are going to take the first step towards achieving that goal or dream you have. Today is the day that you are going to lose all fear and the limiting beliefs you have had for years.

Remember that our time here is limited and the opportunity is this moment not when the time is right. Do that something that scares the crap out of you. Today you are going to look in the mirror and say, I got this!

The version of me you see here is real. The keynotes, the coaching calls, the summit. I’m proud of all of it.

But none of it is the point.

The point is a 10-year-old who taught me patience before any client ever paid me for it. Who gives me the most honest feedback I’ve ever received, usually mid-bite at dinner. Who doesn’t care what was on the slide deck, only whether I showed up.

People ask where I learned to lead. Twenty years of boardrooms helped. She did more.

Everything I build is practice for the leadership that happens off camera.
