(English below ⬇️)

Can you believe it? Just six months ago, this little boy couldn’t speak any Mandarin at all.

The day before yesterday, I received a video from his parents of him practicing his homework at home, and it honestly touched me so much! This 5-year-old Canadian boy 🇨🇦 and his older sister have been taking online Mandarin conversation classes with me since around February this year.

In his very first class, the only thing he could say was “thank you.” He couldn’t understand anything else, so I practically had to translate every single word and sentence into English for him during class. Now, he can take the entire class in Mandarin and even look at pictures and come up with so many sentences on his own! (He wasn’t reading from a script—they were all his own words!) It’s such an incredible leap forward. 🥹🥹🥹

And what about his sister? She’s basically a Mandarin-speaking machine gun now—she talks even more than the teacher does during class! 🤣🤣🤣

English below

For kids growing up overseas, the ultimate boss battle in learning Chinese is definitely writing Chinese characters!

If a family has a Chinese-speaking background and the kids can develop strong listening and speaking skills, that’s already something to celebrate. Most parents don’t put too much pressure on reading and writing, because Chinese characters are genuinely challenging.

That’s why I’m so impressed by Cecilia and her daughter. Not only do they faithfully complete the weekly homework, but they also patiently help their child practice writing entire sentences from memory, without looking at any references. Parents like this are every Chinese teacher’s dream. 🥹🥹🥹

With the sweetest little face, this child wrote the most world-weary sentence ever—and even got the stroke order completely correct! 😂 Apparently, it took three whole days of practice to master this one sentence. Just how much did she not want to go to school? 🤣

But all jokes aside, this kind of perseverance deserves a huge round of applause. Let’s all give her a big hand! 👏

🌈AI備課魔法🌈AI Magic for Lesson Planning (English below)

Last weekend, I attended a Mandarin teacher training workshop at the Overseas Community Affairs Council's Toronto center.

The workshop focused on AI in education. To be honest I wasn't expecting much at first (some AI seminars I've attended in the past were a bit... you know 😅). However, I was pleasantly surprised! Both presenters had extensive teaching experience and introduced many AI tools for lesson planning that I'd never heard of before. The two-day program was so packed with useful ideas that I came home and immediately fell asleep from information overload.

I heard that this workshop is held every year, but it was my first time attending. I was deeply impressed when I saw so many teachers in their 70s and even 80s who are still actively teaching. Some of them have already been using AI to write lyrics and compose music. Their enthusiasm for learning is every bit as strong as that of younger generations, and you can truly see the passion in their eyes.

I hope I can continue to stay curious, keep learning, and always carry that spark in my eyes. ✨

After more than a year away, I’m finally back in the classroom!

Teaching this group of children has truly felt like fate. It all started when a group of parents reached out to me. They had already organized a Mandarin reading club for their children and invited me to teach. They even had the classroom ready—I basically just had to show up! It honestly felt like a gift from heaven. 🥹

At the end of our first term, we held a small graduation ceremony. As luck would have it, it was also my birthday! The children and parents surprised me with a birthday cake, and one of my students gently held my face with both her hands and said:

“Miss Rainbow, you are the best teacher in the world!”

After hearing that, how could I not keep teaching? Sign me up for more classes!

I’m so grateful for everything I’ve encountered in Toronto—for the supportive parents who truly respect teachers and for all of my wonderful students. ❤️

I hope to offer more in-person classes here in north Toronto. If you’re interested, feel free to send me a message for more information!

Traditional Mandarin Character Cultural Festival in Toronto (English below)

Last weekend, I participated as a volunteer in the Traditional Mandarin Character Cultural Festival organized by the Overseas Community Affairs Council’s OCAC in Toronto!

At first, I wanted to set up a booth too, but it was too far away and I couldn’t wake up early enough… just kidding 😆 Since it was my first time attending, I thought I’d observe and learn this year, then maybe set up a booth next year instead. But the best part was getting to meet so many teachers in Canada 🇨🇦 who are also passionate about promoting Chinese character culture!

Toronto’s Chinese schools are truly diverse and full of creativity. The booths ranged from Chinese chess and Chinese-character mahjong to paper cutting and AI portrait generation. Everyone had such creative ideas, and I learned so much from them 🤩 Even better, the organizers arranged for students from Chinese schools to perform on stage — piano 🎹, singing, taekwondo, Chinese speeches, violin 🎻, and more. Having the opportunity to perform on stage is such a valuable experience for children.

Thank you to the Toronto OCAC for organizing such a lively event. The lunch was delicious, and I’m already looking forward to next year — maybe I’ll have a booth, or even bring students to perform on stage 😍

Social Media Anxiety:Take Every “Like” as a Real-Life “You’re Amazing! (English below)

While walking around in Canada, strangers often come up to me and say things like, “Wow, your skirt is so pretty! Where did you buy it?” A classmate in my French course once begged me, “Your hair is so long, straight, and beautiful—please don’t cut it, okay?” Every time I receive compliments like these in real life, it makes me happy for the entire day 🥰

Ever since I started managing social media, even though I only run a very small account, it’s still hard not to care about the numbers behind the scenes.

I often look at amazing teachers or creators online who can write just one short sentence and receive thousands of likes and shares. Whenever I see that, I can’t help but feel tiny in comparison 😂 My posts almost never get more than 100 likes!!!

Later, I saw a sentence on Threads that really encouraged me. It said that every single “like” on social media can be imagined as a stranger or friend in real life coming up to you and saying, “Wow, your post is amazing! I really love it!”

Doesn’t that sound wonderful? 😍😍😍 If ten people came up to compliment me in one day, I’d probably be happy enough to float into the sky.

Even though this page of mine only has a little over 700 followers, it has already brought me many wonderful students and parents, allowing me to support myself through teaching. I’ve always been deeply grateful for that. Of course numbers and performance matter, but why should I compare my likes to huge accounts with tens of thousands of followers? Aren’t we supposed to live for ourselves?

Ever since I started thinking this way, I’ve felt much more at ease. So thank you to that stranger on Threads for the reminder—you’re amazing too 😎

Mandarin character Maze: Follow the “虎” (tiger) characters and lead the tiger to its meat!

For 5-year-olds, a character usually needs to be encountered about 7–20 times before they can reliably remember its form, sound, and meaning.

When I teach harder characters, I often bring out this “character maze.” Sometimes it’s a tiger going to eat meat, sometimes it’s Elsa looking for Anna, or Mario going to eat mushrooms. Basically, I just use whatever the kids love! This way, they repeatedly see the same character without even realizing it, which really helps with memory.

During class, I’ll even “accidentally” take the wrong path on purpose. The kids get super excited and shout, “No! You went the wrong way! That one is ‘馬’ (horse)!” And then I try to hold back my smirk and go back to the correct path. Little do they know, I’ve just snuck in some extra review of other characters 😎

Writing exercise (English below)

When teaching storytelling, the five essential elements are, of course, “characters, events, time, place, and objects.” I had my students randomly draw five completely unrelated elements, and then we each went home to write our own stories.

Using the same set of elements, they ended up creating completely different stories 🤩🤩🤩—and all of them were full of a sense of adventure and imagination (and without spelling mistakes!). Teaching kids is really so much fun!
