The Morning Devotion Pick of the Week.

We talked about Household Food Insecurity in Canada this past Monday. It is hard to believe that this happens in a well-developed country like Canada and that so many people have a problem accessing food.

One important question was asked: How could we improve this situation? Research tells us that increasing the general income of people facing hardship is crucial for better access to food.

Lots of opinions were shared on the floor, but one that caught my attention was: Why do we need to help those who have a problem accessing food? It has shifted our discussion from external factors to internal ones. We need to know the problems of the suffering people and solve them from the root causes.

Then we came up with improving education in personal finance, budgeting, and planning. The discussion inspired us to organize visits to people in need and the food banks. What a fruitful discussion it was!

How do we conduct our Morning Devotions and Global News session? And Why?

Students take turns leading group discussions. It starts with either sharing a piece of news or a Bible verse. Students explain why they selected the materials, showcasing their information selection and organization skills, as well as expressing their personal opinions and reasoning. Following this, they post one or two questions for discussion, demonstrating their questioning skills. I argue that these skills are not only crucial for our young people's learning but also essential generic skills for the future world.

We ate having Morning Devotions and Global news discussion every morning before any classes, and I consider this is one of core parts of Canaan. It fills a crucial gap in Canadian high school program. It is part of moral education if you like but I believe it is a time to seek God and our purpose of life as well as to know our community and the world. In short, it is a precious moment for everyone at Canaan.
