The Fairview Mall Tutoring Academy (http://fairviewtutoring.ca/) provides summer programs for students of all ages in the areas of Math, English and Science. By attending our summer learning program, our students avoid the summer learning loss associated with the lack of academic activity that typically occurs over the two month summer break.

Summer learning loss is the loss of academic skills and knowledge experience by students of all ages over the course of the summer holidays. The loss in learning varies across grade level and subject matter. A common finding across numerous studies is that on average the “summer slide” results in 2.6 months of grade level equivalency loss in mathematics and about 2 months loss in reading proficiency.

HOW DOES IT WORK?
Our students complete a no-charge evaluation and based on this evaluation an individualized program is designed. Whether the student works on closing any academic gaps or focuses on their next grade level, students enjoy working with our highly qualified tutors in our comfortable learning environment. Come September, our students are ready to hit the pavement running, giving them a significant advantage over students that have not had any academic activity over the summer.

Tutoring online has been a new and exciting learning curve, and Fairview Mall Tutoring Academy http://fairviewtutoring.ca/ strives to provide students with just as comprehensive an experience as the one in person.

One of the biggest concerns when tutoring online, is the question of how we will update parents and keep them involved in their student’s learning. The solution has two parts, the first is the lesson notes. After each session, the parents receive an update as to what went on in the session and whether or not there is homework assigned. We also provide parents the option to join at the end of each session for the last few minutes to ask questions, receive live updates, and just to chat in general. This open communication ensures that parents are involved in their student’s learning, and they get a sense of comfort in knowing, and having spoken to, the person who is tutoring their student.

Our online English tutoring is tailored to each student’s needs, and covers a wide variety of topics. Because of how the lessons are structured the students are more attentive and engaged in the work they are doing. Together with our students, we are studying poetry, short stories, and continue with novels. We are also doing writing activities such as paragraphs, and short stories, as well as grammar exercises like proof-reading and vocabulary work. To assist the students to enrich their oral communication skills, we are completing fun activities like debates, poetry readings, and with their book reports from their novel study, they are reading their favorite scenes with as much character as possible.

Each week, the students have the opportunity to talk about what they’re currently doing in class and whether or not they need help. From public speaking tips, to printable guides on how to edit work, to information sheets on literary devices, we cover any topic that comes up in their class, and even more!
