🏃‍♀️🏃‍♂️ WHAT A DAY FOR OUR HOWLERS! 🐺❤️

We could not be more proud of our Cross Country team! Over the past three weeks, these students have trained, challenged themselves, encouraged one another and put in the work — and today, they left it ALL on the trail.

We saw students push harder than they ever have, dig deep when the course got tough, and cross that finish line knowing they had given everything they had. THAT is something to celebrate!

🩰 Ballet 101 at C.D. Howe!

Yesterday, our students in Grades 1–8 had the wonderful opportunity to participate in Ballet Jörgen’s Ballet 101 program.

Students experienced live performances by professional dancers, learned how ballet can be used to tell a story, and explored how movement can communicate different emotions. They even had the chance to try some basic ballet positions and movements themselves!

It was a fantastic opportunity to experience the arts in an interactive, engaging way — and our Howlers thoroughly enjoyed it.

A big thank you to Ballet Jörgen for bringing this unique learning experience to our school! 🩰✨

👟 A Wonderful Gift for Our Howlers! ❤️

A huge thank you to Sisters for Canadian Black Community, in collaboration with Canadian Tire – Thunder Centre, for the generous donation of 20 pairs of indoor shoes to C.D. Howe Public School!

Having the right shoes helps students feel comfortable, confident and ready to participate fully in their school day. We are incredibly grateful for community partners who see a need and step forward to support our students and families.

Thank you for helping take care of our Howlers and showing what community looks like in action. 🐺❤️

🧡 Every Child Matters — Today and Every Day

Today, on the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, our students and staff took time to listen, learn, reflect and honour the experiences, cultures, languages and stories of Indigenous Peoples.

Across C.D. Howe, that learning looked different depending on the age and stage of our students. Classes explored the meaning and history of Orange Shirt Day and residential schools, listened to the words and experiences of Indigenous Elders and storytellers, read books including When We Were Alone and Every Child Matters, watched Phyllis Webstad share the story behind Orange Shirt Day, and reflected on the importance of family, culture, language, identity and traditions.

Students wrote and explored Land Acknowledgements, researched and wrote about what they were learning, designed orange shirts, spent time learning outdoors, and considered how they can help others feel safe, included, valued and that they belong. One class even walked four laps together to represent the four seasons.

Our youngest Howlers continue to build Anishinaabemowin vocabulary into their daily learning, listen to Indigenous voices and stories, and think about what it means to live respectfully on the land we love and share.

But perhaps the most important part of today is recognizing that Truth and Reconciliation cannot live only on September 30.

Learning the truth and walking toward reconciliation happens in the books we choose, the voices we listen to, the language we learn, the relationships we build, the questions we ask and the way we treat one another — every day.

We are grateful for the learning happening throughout our school community and for the responsibility we all share in continuing this journey.

🧡 National Day for Truth and Reconciliation 🧡
Today, the CD Howe school community pauses to remember and honour the children who never returned home, the Survivors of residential schools, and their families and communities.

The bright orange sunrise reminds us that while we remember the past, we also look toward a future rooted in truth, understanding, respect, and reconciliation.

Today and every day, may we listen, learn, remember, and continue walking together on the path toward reconciliation.

Yesterday, our students, staff and families came together for our annual Terry Fox Walk, spending time outside, walking the track and reflecting on Terry’s incredible determination, courage and lasting impact.

We were pleased to welcome Lakehead Public Schools CEO Sherri-Lynne Pharand to join us, along with members of our local media who helped capture and share the spirit of the day. 📸🎤

Our Howlers showed wonderful school spirit, encouraged one another and took part with enthusiasm from start to finish. Events like this are a great reminder of what can happen when a school community comes together around a shared purpose. 🐺❤️

🏕️🪶 Grade 7 & 8 at Fort William Historical Park! 🪶🏕️

What an incredible experience for our Grade 7 & 8 students! ❤️🖤

Students stepped back in time and fully immersed themselves in life at Fort William Historical Park overnight. They wore traditional clothing 👗🧥, spent time in the Anishinaabe encampment 🪶🔥, tasted traditional foods, learned dances to the sound of the fiddle 🎻🕺 and tried their hand at traditional crafts 🧵🪡.

They also worked hard digging for potatoes in the garden 🥔🌱, helped around the farm with the animals 🐴🐐🐓, experienced muskets and cannons 💥, started fire from flint and steel and listened to stories around the campfire 🔥📖.

And while there were MANY memorable moments… we have a feeling that hide-and-seek in the dark might have been the highlight! 🔦🌙😂

We feel incredibly fortunate to have had such a rich, hands-on learning experience so early in the school year. Experiences like this are the ones students remember! 🥰

A huge thank you to Mr. Docimo and Ms. Maki for spending the night, supporting our students and helping make the entire experience such a success. 🙌👏❤️

A big congratulations to our Junior Boys and Girls Soccer Teams who competed today!

While we’re proud of the wins, we’re even more proud of how our students represented C.D. Howe — with teamwork, encouragement and great sportsmanship both on and off the field. ❤️🖤

A huge thank you to the conveners, coaches and families who gave their time and support to make today such a positive experience for our athletes.

🎉 C.D. Howe's Top 10 Moments of 2025-26! 🐺❤️

As another incredible school year comes to a close, we couldn't help but look back at all the memories we've made together. Here are just a few of the moments that made this year one to remember...

10. We explored beyond the classroom.
From Maple Tops and the Founders Museum to Kingfisher, skiing at Loch Lomond, Thunder Bay Museum and Art Gallery, listening to the TBSO, hiking at Sleeping Giant, sleeping at Fort William Historical Park, and countless outdoor learning adventures, our classrooms stretched far beyond our school walls.

9. We tried something new.
Our students stepped onto tennis courts, wrestling mats, baseball diamonds, canoeing lakes, coding circuits, and even explored 3D printing. New opportunities helped many discover talents they never knew they had!

8. We celebrated what makes each of us unique.
Whether it was our Human Pride Flag, Indigenous learning experiences, Black History Month, Every Child Matters, creative Arts and Music, or classroom/school celebrations, we continued to learn that every person belongs and every voice matters.

7. We showed our Howler spirit.
Track and field, basketball, volleyball, handball, 3-Pitch, Special Olympics, baseball, tennis, and so many more events reminded us that giving your best and supporting your teammates matters most.

6. We became stronger readers and learners.
From the Reading Olympics and book fair, to coding challenges, science investigations, math problem-solving, and classroom discoveries, students challenged themselves every day to grow.

5. We celebrated together.
Kindergarten Graduation, Grade 8 Graduation, Summer Send-Off, spirit days, performances, tournaments, popsicles, music, and countless classroom celebrations filled our year with smiles.

4. We had an amazing community behind us.
Thank you to our families, School Council, volunteers, community partners, coaches, lunch supervisors, crossing guards, bus drivers, and everyone who supported our students throughout the year. We truly couldn't do it without you.

3. We made new friends and strengthened old friendships.
Whether learning with buddy classes, welcoming new students, or simply playing together at recess, we continued building the caring community that makes C.D. Howe so special.

2. We lived what it means to be a Howler.
Every day, students showed kindness, perseverance, curiosity, courage, and respect. You made us proud in classrooms, on field trips, on stages, on playing fields, and throughout our community.

The people.

The students who filled our halls with laughter.
The families who partnered with us every step of the way.
The staff who gave their hearts each and every day.

Together, you made C.D. Howe a place where learning happens, friendships grow, and memories are made.
