On January 18th, 2022, at 12 PM Runnymede will be hosting part one of a two-part lecture series on “How to Sue the Government”.

Part one of the lecture series is focused on economic liberties. We are excited to announce that Justin Pearson from the Institute of Justice will be our speaker for the event!

Justin Pearson is the managing attorney for the Institute for Justice’s Florida Office (“IJ”). Justin has fought tirelessly against unnecessary occupational licensing and restrictive small business regulations. Justin will speak about IJ's litigation in pursuit of economic liberty for all Americans.

Further, Justin will speak about IJ picks projects, finds their litigants, and effectively narrates pleadings both for the court of law and the court of public opinion.

SPEAKER INTRODUCTION: Meet Todd McCarthy

Todd McCarthy was Called to the Ontario Bar in 1989. Todd has continually dedicated himself to advocacy, primarily as defence counsel. Todd J. McCarthy is a senior partner at Flaherty McCarthy LLP (Ontario), co-founded by the former Minister of Finance James Flaherty. Todd is certified as a Specialist in Civil Litigation by the Law Society of Upper Canada. He has appeared in over 100 jury and non-jury trials and a multitude of arbitrations and appeals. He has shared his experience by instructing at Queen’s University, at the Law Society of Upper Canada, and at Durham College. Todd was the Defence Counsel Honouree for 2019 at the Ontario Trial Lawyers Association Annual Celebration of the Personal Injury Bar. Todd is a member of the Ontario Bar Association, Canadian Defence Lawyers and the Advocates Society.

SPEAKER INTRODUCTION: Meet James L. Vigmond

Jim Vigmond was called to the Bar in 1983, and is a graduate of the University of Western Ontario and Queen’s University Law School. At Oatley Vigmond, Jim leads a team of lawyers and support staff with broad expertise in spinal cord, brain injury and serious orthopaedic cases.

The ability to make a profound difference in people’s lives is what attracted him to personal injury law. For Jim, the clients’ right to fair compensation is the pillar of his deep commitment to improving the lives of injured persons and their families.

In his spare time, Jim enjoys traveling, scuba diving and fishing. He also enjoys staying active and has run the New York and Toronto marathons – he is not very fast, but always persistent.

He is one of the incredible panellists at the Transmountain Pipeline and Indigenous Consultation discussion of September 28!

Sean’s national litigation practice focuses on business-critical disputes. He acts for corporate clients in complex oil and gas litigation, environmental matters, regulatory investigations, class action defence and product liability actions.

Additionally, Sean has considerable experience representing major resource project proponents, corporate taxpayers, regulated industries and government in constitutional challenges, appeals and judicial review of ministerial and tribunal decisions. These cases often involve stay or injunction applications, the duty to consult Indigenous peoples, and novel legal issues.

Sean regularly appears in courts across Canada, including the Supreme Court of Canada, the Alberta Court of Appeal, the Federal Court of Appeal, the British Columbia Court of Appeal, the Alberta Court of Queen’s Bench, the British Columbia Supreme Court and the Manitoba Court of Queen’s Bench.

In addition to his corporate and commercial practice, Sean is active in pro bono, public interest advocacy.

When not in court, Sean works with clients proactively to identify and mitigate risks to their business.

Sean clerked at the Alberta Court of Queen’s Bench and has otherwise spent his entire legal career at Osler, joining as a summer student in 2011.

Darwin Hanna is a founding partner of Callison & Hanna with a focus on comprehensive and specific land claims, self-government, and business law. Darwin graduated from SFU and UBC with degrees in Criminology and Law. He is a member of both the Law Society of British Columbia and the Northwest Territories. For the last 20 years, Darwin has taught First Nations and Economic Development as an Adjunct Professor at UBC’s Allard School of Law. Recently, he authored Legal Issues on Indigenous Economic Development published by LexisNexis. He was the recipient of the GNWT Premier’s Award for collaboration on the Wildlife Act. He is a member of the Nlaka’pamux Nation from the community of Lytton in the Fraser Canyon of BC.
