The Bora Laskin Faculty of Law, Lakehead University

Cheers to TEN years! Last week we wrapped up our year of special events with a weekend of celebrations. Thank you to all alumni, students, staff, faculty, and community partners who helped us mark the occasion.

On March 21st we opened our events with a special Pipe Ceremony and feast, which opened with remarks from FWFN Chief Michele Solomon and Lakehead University President Gillian Siddall. Led by Elder Sam Achneepineskum, the ceremony represented renewal and our continued commitment to reconciliation through a deeper understanding of Indigenous law.

March 22nd featured an Alumni Panel with seven BLFL graduates representing a wide array of legal career pathways. They participated in a panel discussion, providing students with valuable insight into navigating the early years of lawyering. Later that evening, a great time was had at Sleeping Giant Brewing Co. for a ‘mix and mingle’ social - fantastic company, tasty snacks, and fun prizes!

Lastly, during the afternoon of March 23rd, we hosted an “Open Doors” drop in at the PACI Building with tours, a raffle, treats, and displays. It was wonderful to see everyone who came through the doors, including many former PACI students other local residents for whom the building holds special memories. Even Wolfie stopped by!

It’s been a whirlwind of a decade and we are proud of the many successes of our innovative program and exceptional people. We cannot wait to see what the next decade brings!

We are excited to continue the celebrations for the Bora Laskin Faculty of Law’s 10th anniversary year with a special event as part of our ongoing ‘Bora Laskin Distinguished Lecture Series’. We look forward to welcoming Philip Girard; Professor Emeritus, Osgoode Hall, on November 23rd to speak about Chief Justice Laskin and his immense contributions to Canadian law.

Immediately following the lecture will be a student recognition ceremony, concluding with a reception on the second floor. The event is free to attend, advance registration required - please see link in bio to RSVP!

On Monday we welcomed The Honourable Malcolm Rowe of the Supreme Court of Canada. He first met with faculty members, and then delivered a midday presentation on “The Unwritten Constitution” to a crowd of students, faculty, staff, and members of the local bar. Thank you, Justice Rowe, for an insightful talk and for taking time out of your busy schedule to join us in Thunder Bay!

Yesterday morning, we hosted our first “Bora Breakfast” event, kicking off the Faculty’s 10th anniversary year with a celebratory pancake breakfast during the week of Bora Laskin’s birthday. We were honoured to host a conversation with the Right Honourable David Johnston, 28th Governor General of Canada.

The discussion was moderated by current LSS President Laura Ogden, covering topics ranging from the practice of law in the north, to themes found in Mr. Johnston’s newest book, “Empathy”, and even to some fond memories of Bora Laskin himself.
