Our Sound Playground by Helen

Our Sound Playground by Helen Welcome to Our Sound Playground — a joyful, musical space where children don’t just learn piano, they experience it.

Online 1:1 piano lessons for shy, sensitive & perfectionist kids ages 7–11 💛 Helping children build confidence, creativity & a love of music through playful, supportive learning. In these 1:1 online beginner piano lessons, learning is designed to feel engaging, playful, and supportive — especially for children who are shy, hesitant, or perfectionist. Rather than rushing straight into playing, stud

ents are gently guided to listen, explore, and understand the music first, so they can approach the piano with confidence instead of pressure. As a lifelong music teacher and mother of two, I created this studio because I believe music is more than just learning notes — it’s a way to build confidence, express emotions, and create meaningful connections at home. My approach is both play-based and student-centered, combining a clear learning path with flexibility for each child’s pace, personality, and interests. Lessons also include simple, manageable practice support between sessions, so progress feels steady and encouraging — not overwhelming. My goal is to help children grow into everyday musicians — kids who enjoy playing, feel proud of their progress, and develop a lifelong love of music. Because when children feel safe, supported, and inspired…
the music naturally follows.

In April 2020, my son was born right as COVID shut everything down. I expected to pause teaching for months.

Instead, a month later, I was teaching online for the very first time — with nothing but a piano and a laptop.

What started as one laptop camera is now two professional cameras and two webcams — a front-facing view and an overhead shot of the keys, so nothing gets missed.

One monitor became three, including a teleprompter screen so it feels like real eye contact.

Sheet music moved from holding up a book to mirroring straight from my iPad. And the keyboard itself now runs an app that detects every note I play and highlights it in real time, so students can actually see what they're hearing.

None of this was ever about having the best setup. It was about making sure a screen never got between me and the people I teach.

Every upgrade, every late night figuring out new software, every dollar spent — it all came back to one question: is this helping my students feel closer to me, or is it just more stuff?

I do this because I want the kids I teach — and my own kids' generation — to feel just as connected to music as if we were sitting side by side.

I “waste” time in my piano lessons talking about things that have absolutely nothing to do with piano. 😂

We talk about Pokémon, vacations, new hobbies, favourite shows — whatever matters to them.

Because getting to know my students helps me build connection, but it also helps me teach. I can weave their interests into examples and activities that make music more relevant to them.

Sometimes the conversations that have nothing to do with piano end up helping me teach piano better. 💛

Sometimes getting OFF the piano bench is exactly what helps the music click.

Music isn’t just something we read on a page or play with our fingers — it’s something we can feel and experience with our whole body.

We can clap rhythms, step to the beat, move to different tempos, sing melodies, feel musical phrasing and explore dynamics — all before bringing those ideas back to the keys.

There are so many musical concepts children can learn without sitting at the piano.

Especially with young beginners, I want them to embody the music — to hear it, feel it and experience it, not just play the right notes.

Sometimes we sit. Sometimes we move. And all of it is part of learning. 💛

The longer I teach, the more I realize that teaching beginners isn't just about showing them which notes to play.

It's about creating a space where they feel comfortable trying, moving, asking questions, making mistakes and discovering music in a way that makes sense to them.

These are 7 things that continue to shape the way I teach — and while every child is different, connection will always come first. 💛

Piano technique doesn’t always have to happen at the piano.

Clicky pens, pencils, Pop-Its, stuffies, squishies and even Play-Doh can all give young beginners playful ways to explore things like rounded fingers, firm finger joints, finger control, arm weight and depth.

And honestly… pressing Pop-Its and squishing Play-Doh is just more fun.

Play can have a purpose. 💛

From cassette tapes and Sony Walkmans to Siri and iPads… a lot has changed. 😂

I believe great teaching keeps evolving too — while connection with the student always stays at the heart of it. 💛

Choosing a piano teacher is about so much more than finding someone who can play the piano.

It's about finding someone your child connects with, someone who can adapt their teaching, and someone who makes learning enjoyable both during and between lessons.

I hope these tips help you ask the right questions as you begin your search. 💛

Are you with me? 👇

I believe busy homeschooling families shouldn't have to choose between convenience and quality when it comes to music lessons.

I believe children learn best when lessons are:
• Joyful and engaging
• Personalized to them
• Encouraging and confidence-building

And I believe parents deserve music lessons that fit into real life:
• No rushing out the door
• No hours spent driving
• Just high-quality music education from the comfort of home

That's the kind of learning experience I'm passionate about creating every single week
If you're looking for music lessons that are fun for your child, convenient for your family, and never compromise on quality...

You're my kind of people. 💛

Tell me in the comments: What's most important to you when choosing music lessons for your child?

Apps and YouTube can be great tools... but they can't replace a real teacher. 💛

Without personalized feedback, it's easy for children to:
💛 Build habits that are hard to undo
💛 Lose confidence when they get stuck
💛 Wonder if they're "just not musical"

In my private online piano lessons, your child receives:
💛 Personalized guidance
💛 Gentle encouragement
💛 Feedback every step of the way
💛 Support between lessons so they never feel alone

Children don't just need more videos.

They need someone who sees them, encourages them, and knows how to help them grow. 💛

🎹 Thinking about piano lessons, but not sure if your child is ready?

I completely understand.

Starting something new can feel like a big step—for both children and parents.

That's exactly why I created this 2-week trial experience.

Rather than committing to ongoing lessons right away, your child has the opportunity to experience two personalized online piano lessons in a warm, encouraging environment where they can begin building confidence, explore music through play, and simply discover whether learning piano feels like the right fit.

Along the way, you'll also experience the same between-lesson support that my ongoing families receive, giving you a chance to see what learning inside Our Sound Playground is really like.

Whether your child is naturally curious, a little shy, or someone who simply takes a bit more time to warm up, my hope is that they leave those two weeks feeling excited to come back for more. 💛

If you're curious whether we're the right fit, I'd love to learn more about your child, answer your questions, and help you decide whether Our Sound Playground is the right place for them to grow into a more curious, confident, creative, and connected musician through music.
