A Typical Headwaters Academy Experience
Maple Syrup Production
In early spring Headwaters Academy students participate in maple syrup production. Students are challenged to not only understand the production process, but study and engage in forest management, tapping, boiling, packaging, marketing, business planning, market research, and ultimately finding the most environmentally friendly and b
usiness-friendly means by which to take the syrup or value added products (with the help of our resident chef) to market. The table below is a non-exhaustive description of how participation in the maple syrup production process integrates multiple academic concepts, skills, and the acquisition of knowledge. Studying in this method motivates students to learn and they can remember and apply their learning to other contexts long after the experience. This type of learning is the hallmark of a Headwaters Academy education. Language
• Reading, writing, researching, critical response, media literacy, presenting ideas (oral communication)
Math
• Measurement
{Length of tubing, area of sugar bush, density of trees, circumference of trees, volume of sap, volume of syrup, etc}
• Numeracy
{Addition, subtraction, multiplication, division – examples such as taps per acre, yield per tap, profit/loss, economy of scale, etc}
• Data Management
{Polling and graphing – yield and market research; comparing data –
reverse osmosis versus standard energy requirements, etc}
• Geometry and Spatial Sense
{Modeling sugar bush, comparing efficiency of boiler pan shape, etc}
• Probability and Algebra
{Create a predictive model of sap/syrup yield and quality level from
which to make proper decisions with regards to filtration systems, tubing/spile placement, marketing, etc}
Science
• Osmosis
• Filtration
• Density

Canadian psyche
• Current market trends/people’s understanding of alternative sugars
and diets, organic preferences, etc. Technology, Art, French, Physical Education
• Integrated into the study as appropriate. Headwaters Academy is an Innovation Center
Beekeeping
Students are actively seeking to solve the current problem of Colony Collapse Disorder through the application of cutting edge management practices, new experimentation, and the study of different colony locations upon bee mortality. Organic Farming
Students have access to an organic farming operation, greenhouse space, and their own vegetable plot beside the Academy, not to mention the school chickens and pigs. Multiple projects, ranging from cover crop use through the potential for symbiotic planting versus monoculture farming are encouraged and supported based on student interest.
21st Century Technologies
Our students work at the cutting edge of current technologies. Students have access to 3D printing and modeling, a full Lego Robotics suite and regional competition, blogging, and video game design, to name but a few projects. Physical Education, Second Language, and the Arts
Headwaters Academy believes in the value of a strong Physical Education, second language, and Arts Program. An Ontario certified physical education teacher plans daily physical activity. Our art program is supported by local artists while instrumental music and choir is offered to all students twice weekly. Drama is integrated into our curriculum and educational experiences.
