Today marks the 300th anniversary of the 1726 Peace and Friendship Treaty signed between the Mi'kmaq and the British Crown.

To honour this anniversary and reflect on the enduring treaty relationship, we invite you to visit a special installation on the 1726 Peace and Friendship Treaty, on display now in the CBU Cafeteria through Friday, October 2.

Special thanks to Annie Battiste (Teaching Chair in Reconciliation), the Centre for Teaching and Learning, the Purdy Crawford Chair, the Sister Dorothy Moore L'nu Resource Centre and the Department of Psychology for bringing this installation to our campus community.

Today, Cape Breton University is closed in recognition of Truth and Reconciliation Day.

Beginning in 2013, Truth and Reconciliation Day was established to honour Residential School Survivors, their families and those who never returned home.

It is important to reflect upon and recognize, today, and every day, the lasting impacts of Canada's Residential School system.

We encourage you to wear orange today, as part of the "Every Child Matters" initiative, symbolizing the loss of culture, freedom and self-esteem that many Indigenous children experienced.
