Hello everyone,
There has been a lot of discussion about the limited spots at this time at the afterschool program.
We understand that it is difficult for everyone.
We wanted to share with everyone the process we go through to ensure spots are given on a first come first serve basis.
As most of you know, parents initially send an email expressing their interest in being put on the waiting list. This date is noted and this is where the family will be on the waitlist. Families with siblings receive priority.
When a spot opens up we consult the list. It depends largely on the age of the child applying. We sometimes only have a spot for a certain age group.
We feel the age groups are important for the well-being of the children. I know no one would want their grade 5 student in the room with pre-primaries all day every day.
We also have a few other challenges right now with limited space available in Coxheath Elementary. Mr. Leblanc is doing everything he can to make sure we have enough space, however, there are some things that are out of his control.
Please understand that we are licensed by the provincial government, just as a daycare. We have many rules and regulations we have to follow to the letter so we can keep our doors open. One of those rules is space requirements for each child. We need 30 square feet of open play space for each child in the room. If this requirement is not met we would have a violation on our licensing inspection. We are inspected twice per year.
Another challenge we have is around staffing. It is very difficult to find staff that are content working part-time. We are required to have 1 staff per 15 children at all times and 2/3rds of those staff are required to have an ECE level.
Also know that the Elementary School has no input into who gets spots in the program. We are two different entities working together under the same roof. We are grateful for the space we have to offer a high-quality program for your children,
If you have any questions feel free to contact me at [email protected]
Thank you
