I was lucky to to spend some time on CBC Blue Sky this morning with Nature Saskatchewan and the Nature Conservancy of Canada discussing land, conservation, and the need to protect our last remaining wild spaces.
Without wild places, we lose biodiversity, the goods and services they provide (like carbon storage, habitat, etc.) and the ability for young people to connect to land.
If you want to protect it, make sure little people get the chance to spend time on it.🥰

Another great morning of adventuring!
The kids enjoyed a breakfast of bannock and fresh jam, then headed off on their own to find dry tinder for firelighting. What looks dry often isn’t! The kids finished their mallets and moved onto whittling green sticks and completing their bowls and lids.

The last adventure campers of the season….tonight included mallet making, lantern creating, map reading, night hiking, and dessert nachos on the campfire.

“Loose parts play” is based on invitations to play and a few scattered odds and ends that children can use in whatever way their creativity guides them.
In this case, the boards became a raceway, and not for cars, but for a variety of ladybugs that “Jimmy” ended up winning.
The other ladybugs apparently couldn’t be bothered and flew away to do more important tasks.
As instructors, we can’t script this….this is child-led play based solely on imagination and an opportunity to use it without adult interference.
That’s the beauty of it.
On July 5, Sage Creek was hit with a plow wind and hailstorm that devastated the food forest, coulee and garden. All of the apples, berries, cherries, rhubarb, pears, and willow were stripped right to the bark.
As they say, gardening on the prairies can be tough….that’s an understatement!
I could see blossoms from the road so this morning I took a bowl and headed down to see what I could salvage. The borage and mullein are blooming. A wild hive of bees has moved in and are loving the chamomile and calendula. There are even a few tomatoes on vines I had written off. All around are buzzing, happy insects in the sunshine.
Nature has a way of healing what was broken, and the lesson wasn’t wasted on me today. 🥰

Empathy is introduced to our Kids In The Coulee in so many ways. This little kangaroo rat was injured and out in the open…..a few little hands moved him to a much safer spot. Caring for living things is such an important part of our programming.
Side note…did you know kangaroo rats can survive their entire lives without drinking? They receive all their hydration from the seeds they eat! It’s an adaptation to living in a dry habitat.
