When you play a musical instrument, you’re not just creating sound — you’re literally rewiring your brain. Scientists have found that playing an instrument activates every major region of the brain simultaneously — auditory (for sound), motor (for movement), and visual (for reading music). This unique combination builds and strengthens millions of neural pathways, making your brain faster, sharper, and more connected.
Neuroscientists call this phenomenon neuroplasticity, the brain’s ability to form and reorganize synaptic connections. Regular musical practice doesn’t just improve coordination and memory — it actually increases gray matter volume and strengthens the corpus callosum, the bridge between the brain’s hemispheres.
Whether you’re strumming a guitar, playing piano, or drumming to a beat, your brain is constantly learning, adapting, and growing. It’s no wonder long-term musicians often show better focus, creativity, and emotional regulation even decades later.
So, the next time you play, remember — you’re not just making music. You’re sculpting your mind.
A little Chopin in Victor Borge style!
I attended a Recital today of the Vancouver Recital Society. Andrea Lucchesini was amazing... Schubert D946, Brahms opus 118, and all 24 Chopin Preludes. It was sublime! Oh, and Scarlatti and Schubert encores for an extra treat! I am feeling relaxed and honored to have heard him play.

Music must be good for you! 104!
Rest in peace Charles Burrell. ❤️
A classical and jazz bass player, Burrell was the first African-American to be a member of a major American symphony, the Denver Symphony Orchestra, in 1949.
Ten years later he became the first Black person to play with the San Francisco Symphony.
He will be remembered for breaking the colour barrier in classical music.
