True!
The quote is intentionally provocative, but the reality is a little more nuanced.
Many parents come to Montessori because they want something different from conventional education. They want their children to have agency, curiosity, and a genuine love of learning. In that search, phrases like child-led learning can sound appealing.
The challenge is that child-led does not mean adult-absent and, consciously or not, many parents interpret it as such.
Montessori asks the adult to become more attentive, not less. To observe carefully. To prepare the environment thoughtfully. To understand development deeply enough to know when to step forward, when to step back, and when to simply watch.
This is what makes Montessori so difficult, and so often misunderstood.
The adult is not directing every moment. The adult is not controlling every outcome. But neither are they disengaged.
They are studying the child. Adjusting the environment. Presenting lessons. Protecting concentration. Guiding toward greater independence.
Freedom in Montessori is not the absence of guidance.
It is the result of guidance that has been intentionally designed around the developmental needs of the child. Perhaps this is why Montessori can feel so demanding.
It asks less control of the child, but far more preparation of the adult.

The Pink Tower!
Imagine a magical stack of pink cubes that’s not just a toy but a super-smart learning tool! That’s the Pink Tower—a set of ten wooden cubes, each bigger than the last, all dressed in the same lovely shade of pink. At Roots & Wings, kids use this tower to become little size detectives, learning about space, shape, and scale while building their fine motor skills and concentration. No flashy colors or patterns here—just pure, focused fun on figuring out “biggest to smallest” and mastering the art of balance.
Educational Purpose and Benefits
- Visual and Motor Skills: Children refine their visual discrimination and motor control by stacking cubes from largest to smallest.
- Sensorial Development: The Pink Tower isolates the concept of size, enhancing spatial awareness and the ability to categorize differences.
- Motor Skills: Handling the cubes improves precision, hand-eye coordination, and fine motor dexterity.
Why Pink?
- Chosen by Dr. Maria Montessori for visual consistency, helping children focus on size differences.
- The soft pink color is inviting and appealing to young children.
- Symbolizes calmness and nurturing, aligning with Montessori’s supportive educational philosophy.
Montessori materials like this are designed to spark curiosity, encourage independence, and let kids explore and learn at their own pace.

We pledge allegiance to the Earth!
In celebration of Earth Day 2026, we engaged in a variety of activities to help the children understand how to care for our planet. The children worked together to create a poster, sharing ideas about how we can protect the Earth.
We also learned about sorting garbage, practicing how to separate recyclables and waste correctly.
To deepen their understanding, the children explored a water pollution sensory bin, where they observed how pollution affects water and discussed ways we can keep our environment clean.
We also took a walk to a Return-It depot, where the children had the opportunity to see how recycling works in real life. This hands-on experience helped them better understand the importance of recycling and how people contribute to a more sustainable community. They will be watching your recycling habits at home!
