WHAT IS MEANT BY THE TERM QUARTERING?

Quartering, a strategic field dressing technique, serves as a practical solution for efficiently harvesting the edible portions of meat when the transportation of the whole animal proves impractical. This method is particularly advantageous in situations where logistical constraints, such as weight or size, make it challenging to move the entire carcass.

Unlike some field dressing methods, quartering does not mandate the removal of the animal's internal organs unless there is a specific intention to salvage the edible organs. This distinction streamlines the process, allowing for a more focused approach to extracting the prime cuts of meat while minimizing unnecessary steps.

The quartering technique involves systematically disassembling the animal into manageable sections, typically separating it into quarters—hence the name. This method not only facilitates easier transportation but also expedites the cooling of the meat, reducing the risk of spoilage and ensuring the preservation of its quality.

WHAT IS S***T SHOOTING?

S***t shooting is a recreational and competitive activity where participants use shotguns to attempt to break clay targets which two fixed stations mechanically fling into the air at high speed and at a variety of angles.

S***T SHOOTING

S***t is one of the three major disciplines of competitive clay shooting—alongside trap shooting and sporting clays. There are several types of s***t, including one with Olympic status (often called "Olympic s***t" or "international s***t"), and many with only national recognition.

For the American version of the game, the clay discs are 4

5⁄16 inches (109.54 mm) in diameter, 1
+
1⁄8 inches (28.58 mm) thick, and fly a distance of 62 yards (57 m).

ALTERNATIVELY, A SPORTING GUN OR A TRAP GUN IS SOMETIMES USED. THESE HAVE LONGER BARRELS (UP TO 34 INCHES) AND TIGHTER CHOKE. MANY SHOOTERS OF AMERICAN S***T AND OTHER NATIONAL VERSIONS USE SEMI-AUTOMATIC SHOTGUNS AND BREAK-OPEN OVER-AND-UNDER SHOTGUNS.

The international version of s***t uses a target that is slightly larger in diameter [(110±1) mm vs. 109.54 mm], thinner in cross-section [(25.5±.5) mm vs. 28.58 mm], and has a thicker dome center, making it harder to break. International targets are also thrown a longer distance from similar heights, at over 70 yards (64 m), resulting in higher target speed.

The firearm of choice for this task is usually a high-quality, double-barreled over and under shotgun with 24- to 32-inch barrels and very open chokes. Often, shooters will choose an improved cylinder choke (one with a tighter pattern) or a s***t choke (one with a wider pattern), but this is a matter of preference. Some gun shops refer to this type of shotgun as a s***t gun. S***t chokes are designed to produce a 30 inch shot pattern at 21 yards.

CITIZEN SCIENCE BC NATURE STUDY OUTDOOR EDUCATION

What is “Citizen Science” and how can it help to make a difference in our modern but changing world?

Citizen science (similar to community science, crowd science, crowd-sourced science, civic
science, participatory monitoring, or volunteer monitoring) is research conducted with participation from the general public, or amateur/nonprofessional researchers or participants for science, social science and many other disciplines.[1][2] There are variations in the exact definition of citizen science, with different individuals and organizations having their own specific interpretations of what citizen science encompasses.[1] Citizen science is used in a wide range of areas of study including ecology, biology and conservation, health and medical research, astronomy, media and communications and information science.

Many organizations and institutions that study the environment, the natural world and the people that live in the world find it very helpful to have Citizen Scientists observing, sharing, and recording information. We are everywhere and include everyone from young to old. If you have an interest in birds, animals, insects, weather, or even the broad world around you. You observe things and see changes that the limited scientific world is not always able to see on a regular basis. Become a “Citizen Scientist” in your chosen field of interest.

Two of my passions are bird watching and weather. I keep a daily journal that includes the birds that I have seen and the weather-cloud cover, humidity, moisture (rain or snow), wind speed and direction, and temperature. Birding gives me a great deal of pleasure and allows me to slow down and view the world around me. Keeping track of my local weather is interesting and allows me to notice changes and anomalies.

This past weekend I participated in the Great Backyard Bird Count. This is an annual event that encompasses people and countries from around the world. The information, photographs, and audio recordings are recorded and available for scientists, amateur birders, citizen scientists and governments to view. This all helps to keep track of numbers, migration routes, food sources, natural breeding areas, and things that are harmful to birds and contribute to their decline. Things like light pollution, water pollution, lack of water and feeding areas, destruction of breeding areas, and climate change.

My personal list may be small and does not include colourful exotic birds but is still interesting to see the information added to the global map and to speculate of the causes of flatulating numbers. Why was there no Brown Creepers this year? Where are the Redpoles and Bohemian Waxwings?
