Both my parents passed away while I was in Japan.
Both times, I kept playing.
I put it in a box, closed the lid, and kept going.

In some ways that’s a gift. In others — it costs you something
The irony: I’m now the person athletes call when they’re carrying something they haven’t told anyone.

During that season in Japan, I got a call.

They thought it was the end. I flew home.

She perked up. Told me to go live my life. So I went back.

It happened a second time. Same thing.

Then December 14th, my wife called me.

She was gone.

I was asking my wife about the details for this video because I blocked so much of it out.

She told me I didn’t call her for 24 hours after my mom called me to tell me my dad was gone.

I couldn’t tell you why.

She said I was completely shut off.

Both my parents passed away while I was playing hockey in Japan.
I was 4700 miles from home. Both times.

My dad went first — Mother’s Day, 1997. Heart attack, no warning. I flew home, went to the funeral, consoled my mom, and flew back to finish the season.

My mom went December 14, 2003. I’d flown home twice that year thinking it was the end. She bounced back. The third call was the one.

Both times — I just kept playing.

My wife told me I didn’t call her for 24 hours after my dad died. I don’t remember it that way. But I trust her.

The irony of my life: I’m now the person athletes call so they don’t have to handle the tough times alone.

After I got back from Russia.
After the contract situation got sorted.
During the COVID bubble — guys started calling.

Players I’d worked with. Goalies I knew. Just reaching out.

And slowly that’s where The Goalie Therapist started.

It’s weird how things work out.

We had no home rink.

So for the rest of the KHL season, our “home” games were at other teams’ rinks.
They put our logo on their ice.
We played in front of someone else’s fans.

That was the KHL in COVID.

Gets off the phone.
“Boys, I don’t think we’re coming back.”
Everything I owned was still in my hotel room in Beijing.

I never went back for it.

I went to many of my son’s junior games.
Never got anxious. Never got bent out of shape. Just watched and enjoyed it.

Then he made the Team Canada World Junior Challenge. On TSN. Final game against the US.

First two goals went in early.

That was the first time I paced behind the couch.
That was the first time I actually felt it.😁
