SERVICES I AM CURRENTLY OFFERING:
First and foremost, I want people to understand that I am a very well- seasoned professional who has seen many cycles come and go, and that means a vast amount of experience and sensitivity in everything that I do creatively and otherwise.
I want students (and their parents) to understand that I have dealt with just about every kind of learner and with just about every type of neurological wiring imaginable. Never have I shied away from anyone who has challenges, including dealing with physical and mental challenges including cerebral palsy, blindness, dyslexia, anxiety, depression, ADHD, OCD, ODD, Autism, Touretteās Syndrome, Etc. In fact, I have dealt extensively with what I would refer to asā the sensitive artistic make- upā and with very great success. I do not use a āone size fits allā approach in my teaching and tailor my teaching to each student with specific reference to their personality and emotional make- up, personal goals, love of a particular style they wish to pursue, and any strengths and challenge that they possess as they begin their musical and creative journey with me.
Further, I am deeply intuitive to a very great degree, and this has helped me to understand what my students needs both technically, emotionally and creatively.
As I cultivate, with love and care, the beautiful gardens in my yard, so do I nurture the musicianship and artistic abilities of each and every student that comes to me. My own personal goal for each student is simply to make them experience the sheer JOY of making beautiful music through their own voice. I am particularly interested in boosting a studentās self-esteem through the development and love of their own singing voice.
While I love getting young students, I have found that anyone of any age can learn to sing well, as long as they are motivated to do so. I have taught kids as young as 2 and as old as 82, and every age in between. It is not uncommon for entire families to study with me, especially if they perform together regularly in any type of situation, be it church or the concert stage.
My goal is to make each student the best and most beautiful singer that they can be. That also includes stage presence and how you carry yourself on stage and off. I am not interested in turning anyone into something that they are not interested in becoming, so Country and Western is just as important as Opera to me, if that is what my students desires to pursue.
I have a profound love of all things theatrical and dramatic and to that end, I have honed my own acting skills with the quest to bring out the latent actor in my students. This is expressed in interpretation of ANY song sung, from any genre or time period. The interpretation and presentation of a piece is equally important to the technical prowess expressed in the piece, whether it be for a recital, recording, live audition or entire musical theatre or operatic production.
I am at the stage and age of looking for new and creative challenges. I have coached entire productions both vocally and dramatically and am not opposed to doing more. I love adjudicating competitions and am always ready to take on another adjudication project. Not only that, but I love to make composerās melodies better and more singable ⦠and to each and every project I bring my deepest intuitions and love.

Joanna Star Anonychuk began her performance career in Winnipeg at a very young age working as both a professional actress in purely dramatic roles on stage and television, as well as a singer in musical theatre, Gilbert and Sullivan, and opera. Studying with both Sara Udow and Dorothy Lawson in Winnipeg, she focused on becoming a classical lyric-coloratura soprano in her Associate Diploma (ARCT) in voice performance with the Royal Conservatory of Toronto. She also has her MA in Anthropology, focusing on Ethnomusicology, from the University of Manitoba where she was a Full Fellowship Award recipient. She held vocal scholarships at many major Canadian Arts Centres including: the Banff School of Fine Arts (where she studied with Martin Isepp, Herta Glaz, Harold Brown and David Astor), the Shawnigan Summer School of the Arts, the Vancouver Academy of Music (with Phyllis Mailing), and The Vancouver Community Music School (with Dr. Jacob Hamm and Luigi Wood).
As a classical soprano, she has performed widely across British Columbia's Lower Mainland, and both Western and Northern Canada with the Trio Anjoleo (with Angela Cavadas and Leo Aquino) under the auspices of George Zuckermanās āOverture Concert Productionsā.
She has performed with the Vancouver Opera Association, as a guest soloist with the Vancouver New Music Society, CBC Nationally, Vancouver Philharmonic Orchestra, Okanagan Summer Festival for Composers, and repeatedly across BC with the Vancouver Academy Cello Ensemble under the direction of Ian Hampton of the Purcell String Quartet.
Joanna has also performed duet concerts with guitarist/lutanists Stephen Boswell and Alan Rinehart and has done numerous solo concerts spanning her entire career. She has sung on both Radio and Television, and performed numerous original compositions by composers such as Francis Chan, Jean Piche, David Jaggs as well as recorded their compositions. Joanna also worked as the administrator with Prism Dance Theatre and the Vancouver New Music Society.
As a young performer, Joanna entered and won a number of musical, artistic, and dramatic competitions in both Manitoba and BC in various divisions. She was part of the theatre company āPlays for Livingā Actors Ensemble for over 7 years that performed social drama throughout Manitoba and Winnipeg. Her first paid musical theatre performance was with Rainbow Stage in Winnipeg when she was 16. She continues to personally perform solo concerts in a variety of settings and adjudicates performing arts competitions.
Joanna has taught both voice and drama extensively in many arts and cultural centres, colleges, and musical institutes, as well as privately in Manitoba and throughout the Lower Mainland. She has coached entire productions, including all leads in the productions. Joanna currently teaches full time in her studio in Surrey. She performs in many recitals alongside her talented students and teaches a variety of musical styles: Jazz, Musical Theatre, Popular, and Classical Opera. She teaches in any language brought to her and with great success. She never turns down the opportunity to coach and teach an unusual project.
Joannaās students continually distinguish themselves in leading roles across Canada in major Opera houses and with Symphonies such as the Vancouver Symphony and Victoria Symphony. Additionally in many leading performance venues doing solo and ensemble concerts and theatre companies in Metro Vancouver in professional Musical Theatre productions. She also teaches in the public school system, colleges, numerous dance theatres, community musical theatre productions, and with the Opera Program at the University of British Columbia (UBC).
Joannaās students have won major scholarships to attend the best music faculties in Canada including the University of Toronto, UBC, University of Victoria, Kwantlen Polytechnic University, Capilano University, and many others.
Some of her students are thriving with online careers doing a myriad number of styles and in original compositions and musical theatre productions, etc.
Joanna has a special knack of helping young composers with vocal lines so that they are not only more beautiful, but also far more singable. She welcomes this type of work and the more creative the project, the more engaged, excited and interested she becomes!
