Children don't need more things to do. They need more time to be. Look at the average child's schedule: school, homework, soccer, piano, tutoring, art class, swimming. We've confused busy with better. We've mistaken stimulation for growth. But development doesn't happen in motion—it happens in the spaces between. Children need time to be bored so their imaginations can wake up. They need unstructured hours to follow their curiosity wherever it leads. They need permission to do nothing productive, nothing measurable, nothing that will look good on a future application. In those empty spaces, magic happens. A child lying in the grass watching clouds isn't wasting time—they're learning to be present, to notice, to wonder. A child building an elaborate imaginary world with stuffed animals isn't being lazy—they're developing narrative skills, emotional processing, and creative problem-solving. The best thing you can offer a child isn't another activity. It's spaciousness. Room to breathe. Time to simply exist without an agenda, a goal, or an adult directing their every move. We've forgotten that being is the foundation for all meaningful doing.

“Oh well, a little dirt is good for the stomach.”

Growing up in Sweden, that was the adults’ go-to phrase whenever they caught a child shoving their mouths full of dirt or failing to wash their hands before dinner.

Turns out… they might have been onto something!

In this Finding Nature News feature, Linda Åkeson McGurk (Rain or Shine Mamma) shares her childhood moments coming home with mud-caked hands and dirty feet after a day of playing outside. She also shares how, as a new mother, she then set out to see if there was any scientific support for her parents’ relaxed attitude toward mud and mess.

As Linda learned, “Playing in dirt is literally building children’s immune system from the ground up.”
