Field trip to Farmfair International at the EXPO Center started with a Sustainability tour of the EXPO’s journey to net zero… they started at 35% waste diversion, are now at 70% and have a goal to reach 90%! Pretty amazing for a venue that sees 1.5 million people across 240 events each year!
ORCA is a biodigester in the kitchen that manages organics at the source. Its liquid does go into the wastewater stream so perhaps there is an opportunity there…
The rooftop is covered in solar panels which they use as the majority of their power, needing to supplement from the grid in winter.
Bees are also part of the story with solitary bee homes on the property and bee hives on the roof that support local pollination.
Procurement is an important component and they source as much local food as they can, use compostable plates/utensils, and track the volume of material coming in and going out of the venue.
An exhibition of all kinds of cattle breeds from all over western Canada fill the halls and the aroma of barns fill the air.
Crazy how one day this place is full of volleyball courts or a concert seating to the entire floor covered in rubber matting, wood chips and cute heifers!
thanks for organizing!

"The farmers are the scientists” is a quote from Peter Byck, director of the documentary Roots so Deep.
Producers have been doing it for generations, but the way we manage our grasslands can have fantastic benefits for our environment. AMP Grazing in particular has been shown to have the potential to increase productivity for the land, cattle and producers involved.
Interested in learning more?
Foothills Forage & Grazing Association, Wheatland County and the Strathmore High School Community Greenhouse are excited to offer a free community screening on February 13th.
Join us at the Strathmore High School Theater at 5:30 for snacks and a screening of the documentary Roots so Deep (you can see the devil down there).
Following the screening there will be a producer panel, featuring producers from our area, where you will have a terrific opportunity to ask questions and get more into the hows and whys of AMP grazing and just local agricultural practices in general.
