Hunting wild pigs does not work as a management tool.

Research from the US, where wild pigs (i.e., loose domestic pigs, pot-bellied pigs, or Eurasian boar) are established has demonstrated conclusively that hunting them only serves to further spread them.

This is because:
- When pigs are hunted, the full sounder (group of pigs) is never fully killed, and they scatter to new areas
- When they scatter, they are harder to find and due to their reproductive rate (i.e., sexual maturity in 6 months and litters of 6-10 piglets), they quickly rebound.
- They have what’s called compensatory reproduction, meaning when they are being pressured by things like hunting, they will have larger litter sizes.
- When hunted, they learn to avoid humans and will become nocturnal.
- Additionally, if hunted, you risk shooting someone’s escaped livestock.

There is currently no confirmed evidence of established (self-sustaining) populations in Ontario, but sightings continue to be reported. Escapees from captivity remain the primary source, making early detection and rapid response critical.

The Ontario government has joined Alberta and Saskatchewan in the CCFR's legal challenge of the federal government’s sweeping 2020 ban on “assault-style” fi****ms.

Solicitor General Michael Kerzner slammed the ‘buyback,’ saying it “has done nothing to address the root causes of gun violence in our communities.”

At issue is the Trudeau government’s 2020 decision to issue a sweeping ban through regulations of some 1,500 types of weapons it deemed “assault-style,” just weeks after a gunman killed 22 people in Nova Scotia. That ban has since grown to cover more than 2,500 models.

After failed appeals at lower courts, Canada’s top court agreed in March to hear a challenge from the Canadian Coalition for Firearm Rights (CCFR), which has argued cabinet does not have the authority to order the sweeping ban.

The CCFR does not expect the Supreme Court to rule before the end of the buyback program and the expiration of an amnesty period this fall, but is hoping its decision could reverse the ban and prevent the criminalization of Canadians who have refused to hand over their guns.

In the meantime, it is seeking an extension of that amnesty period, which expires at the end of October.

The CCFR says more than two million gun owners are affected. The federal government has estimated there are nearly 180,000 of the now-banned fi****ms in circulation.

Simon Lafortune, a spokesperson for Public Safety Minister Gary Anandasangaree, said, “We are confident in our position and look forward to demonstrating it in court.”
