Is your child starting playschool in September and you’re looking for ways to help them “get ready”. Here are some helpful tips from our classroom educators to set up a successful transition to playschool!

1) Encourage independence throughout your normal routine. Playschool is often a child’s first time away from parents regularly and an opportunity for children to be more independent in the classroom setting. Encouraging your child to dress themselves, use the washroom and carry their own things independently not only sets them up for playschool but also builds confidence prior to the school transition.

2) Talk with your child. Oral communication skills are important in a group setting and being able to speak to others ultimately helps children build relationships more easily. You can talk during regular routines and day to day activities. Ask your child questions about what they see, how they feel and what they are interested in. When children feel heard their confidence grows.

3) Practice separating. Giving your child time away from you with trusted individuals for short periods of time allows children to see that coming and going are very normal parts of life. Set short play dates with family or friends to start the transition.

Another great idea is to read your child stories that directly apply to their next big change. The library is an amazing resource for “going to school” books or you can comment “STORY” and our educators will send you a Parkland Early Learning Playschool social story to help your child get ready for playschool fun!

One aspect of our programming that sets us apart is helping children gain independence. Whether it be with snacks, dressing, washing or finding their own items, independence is a foundational skill in the early years. Parents can help their children be successful at this by labelling your items so children know exactly what belongs to them. (Another bonus is that teachers are able to return labeled items to their owners with ease and keep them out of the lost and found)

Check out our Mabel’s Labels fundraiser link to order personalized labels and start the school year off strong.

The Blue Jays have completed 28 weeks of

TRY IT TUESDAY

We tried 19 fruits and 9 vegetables from Apples to Zucchini and experimented with different varieties of the same things too. Our least favourite food was papaya (as it turns out it’s not very good to eat on its own) and our most favourite food was watermelon!

A big thank you to Freson Bros. in Stony Plain and Stony Plain Safeway 8885 for sponsoring us in our food tasting adventure!

Thank you to everyone that came out to our 5th Annual Art Show.

This event is one of many that sets our playschool apart! The children are provided the space and opportunity over the school year to engage with many different styles of art and mediums. Educators carefully collect and display this art and invite the families in for a celebration. The absolute pride that these children have to share their special work with their special people is what it is all about!

“If it hasn’t been in the hand…and the body…it can’t be in the brain”- Bev Bos

Here at PELP, we believe in full body play and exploration.

It may look like mess, but it is actually learning taking place! This is the power of play!
