Definition of a Cross Country has been added to the CARS:

Cross-country flight time means the flight time recorded when a flight follows standard navigation procedures along a pre-planned route to a destination that is at least 25 nautical miles from the point of departure.

Do not count your short diversions or any cross countries less than 25 nm in the cross country section of logbooks and PTR's any more please.

If you are logging xc, as always, be sure to write down the route so it can be verified it meets the requirements if necessary.

As you know, both Steinbach airports (CJB3 and CKK7) will be switching over to 122.95 with MF designation on Thursday May 14th, 2026. There is, however, an important matter to take note of: This change will only appear in the CFS on July 9th, 2026 (the following AIRAC cycle). Until then, this only shows up as a NOTAM.

The reason behind this discrepancy is a miscommunication between Transport Canada and Nav Canada along the process. Each aeronautical publication has to be adjusted individually, and a change in the AIM does not automatically change the AIRAC (hence CFS and other NavCanada documents). This means that unfortunately we will continue to see the old frequency on Nav Canada publications for another 56 days until July 9th. Only the NOTAM is the official public document that informs pilots of this change. Nevertheless, the frequency change will happen on Thursday May 14th.

Nav Canada controllers are aware of this, and will remind pilots of the MF frequency when flying in the vicinity of Steinbach.

Our recommendation:
It is imperative to review your NOTAMs before any aviation activity, even for a local flight or circuit practice. We also ask that you would share this with as many other pilots as possible to ensure most pilots receive this communication. We also recommend monitoring 122.7 if your aircraft is equipped with a second radio for some time after the frequency change.

Steinbach North and South (CJB3, CKK7) will change frequency to 122.95 with MF (Mandatory Frequency) designation. We will continue to use the current ATF 122.7 until May 14 0901z
