Inspiring and Enabling MUN students to turn ideas into high-growth businesses.

08/21/2026

It started as a scribble on a napkin.
A "what if" whispered during classroom lectures.
A problem you just couldn't stop thinking about.

Today, on World Entrepreneurs' Day, we're celebrating those moments and the founders bold enough to chase them.

To our student founders and alumni: thank you for dreaming loud, building fearlessly, and refusing to wait for "someday." You're not just being entrepreneurial; you're rewriting what's possible.

Here's to the ideas still forming, the pitches still being perfected, and the ventures that haven't launched yet - but definitely will.

Happy World Entrepreneurs' Day! ๐ŸŽ‰

Meet Shelby Seymour and Ally Reid, two founders who met at the Memorial Centre for Entrepreneurship (MCE) and are now building LAYR, a global online platform that connects independent sellers, designers, production partners, and customers, enabling products to be designed globally and manufactured locally.

Shelby, founder of ๐—•๐—ฒ๐—ฎ๐˜‚๐˜… ๐Ÿฏ๐——, and Ally, founder of ๐—–๐—น๐—ฎ๐˜† ๐—ฏ๐˜† ๐—”๐—น๐—น๐˜†, are both past participants in MCEโ€™s ๐—ฆ๐˜๐˜‚๐—ฑ๐—ฒ๐—ป๐˜-๐—ถ๐—ป-๐—ฅ๐—ฒ๐˜€๐—ถ๐—ฑ๐—ฒ๐—ป๐—ฐ๐—ฒ ๐—ฝ๐—ฟ๐—ผ๐—ด๐—ฟ๐—ฎ๐—บ.

Today, they are taking that journey one step further with LAYR.

As they prepare for launch, LAYR is gathering signups at officiallayr.com and preparing to onboard its first 100 founding sellers.

At MCE, the goal goes beyond supporting businesses. It is about building global leaders, empowering student founders, and creating an environment where ambitious ideas can become solutions to real-world problems.

A special shoutout to Isaac Adejuwon, MCEโ€™s Entrepreneur-in-Residence, for bringing this powerful duo together!

โญ MCE Alumni Spotlight: Brett Vokey

Meet Brett Vokey, Founder & CEO of BreatheSuite and winner of the 2018 Mel Woodward Cup.

What started as a bold idea at Memorial University has grown into a healthcare innovation company transforming pulmonary rehabilitation through virtual care. Today, BreatheSuite is helping patients across North America breathe easier, regain independence, and improve their quality of life.

Brett's journey is a powerful reminder that the best ventures begin with empathyโ€”a desire to solve real problems and improve people's lives. Through innovation, perseverance, and purpose, he has built a company that is creating measurable impact for patients, healthcare providers, and communities.

This is more than an entrepreneurial success storyโ€”it's proof that when purpose meets innovation, ideas can change lives.

We wish Brett and the BreatheSuite team continued success as they expand their impact and make pulmonary care more accessible for patients everywhere. ๐Ÿ’™

The Memorial Centre for Entrepreneurship (MCE) hosted another inspiring ETP session featuring Suren Margaryan, Co-Founder & COO of CAKEYHAND and Memorial University and MCE alumnus.

Suren introduced participants to the Entrepreneur Emotional Curveโ€”the different stages founders often experience while building a ventureโ€”and used the evolution of CAKEYHAND as a real-world example to bring these concepts to life. Suren highlighted the importance of adaptability, persistence, and maintaining an entrepreneurial mindset throughout the venture-building journey.

๐Ÿ‘ Thank you, Suren, for sharing your insights and inspiring the next generation of founders!
