Memorial University mourns the passing of Dr. Michael Staveley, professor of Geography and former Dean of the Faculty of Arts.
A celebration of life will be held Tuesday, August 11, 2026, 5:30 – 7:30 PM in the Harbour View Room at The Rooms, St. John’s, NL.

We’d like to declare that this year’s bloom is in honour of retired Geography staff member Carole Anne Coffey, who passed away earlier this spring and who deeply loved this very magnolia tree, as evidenced by several of her beautiful paintings.

It has begun!! The first blooms have fully opened on the old Science Building magnolia and she’s GORGEOUS. With this late start, they should still be lovely for convocation in a few weeks.
