St Patrick's Convent School, St John's

In the Cork of the 1750s, teaching a Catholic child to read was against the law. A wealthy woman from a landed family in the Blackwater valley came home from Paris and started doing it anyway.

Honora Nagle, known always as Nano, opened her first school in a rented mud cabin in a poor lane in the city, and she did not tell her own family for a long time because the risk to them was real. Within about a decade she had seven schools running, five for girls and two for boys, funded by spending her inheritance down to almost nothing.

She walked the lanes at night with a lantern, visiting the sick and the old in the tenements, and the people of Cork called her the Lady of the Lantern. In 1775 she founded the order that became the Presentation Sisters, and when she died in 1784 she had spent everything she had. Her schools went on to spread across Ireland and then across the world.
