A couple weeks ago, History Honours student Joanna Walbourne was awarded MUN’s prestigious David and Ethel Evans Scholarship in History for 2025 valued at $18,099. The award is given to a History Honours students in the final year of their program. Joanna is currently finishing up her course work, having already completed her Honour’s thesis. Titled “A Property of Protest in the Heart of God-Fearing St. John’s: Pro-Life and Pro-Choice Advocacy Organizations in the Opening of the Morgentaler Clinic in St. John’s, Newfoundland, 1972-1990,” Joanna’s thesis was supervised by Dr. Jeff Webb.
Joanna was grocery shopping with her sister when she received an email notifying her that she was the recipient of the generous scholarship. Her first thought was that there must be a typo in the amount awarded but a follow-up email confirmed the figure. Joanna was both shocked and thrilled, and we are delighted for her.
Besides her schoolwork, Joanna also works at the Centre for Newfoundland Studies in the QEII Library, organizing the stacks, retrieving and returning material, and working at the service desk. Next year she plans to attend the MA program at Western University in the Library and Information Science Program.
This picture was recently taken after Joanna received the 2025 Dean’s Award for Academic Excellence after having placed on the Dean’s List each year of her degree. Congratulations, Joanna! We’re extremely proud of you!!!
