Hi everyone! My name is Lauren and I am in my third year of my BSc in General Chemistry and Behavioural Neuroscience degree. I am a Research Assistant working under both Dr. Cahill and Dr. Jobst which have been amazing experiences thus far! Outside of school, I love kayaking, volunteering and listening to music!

Social media and knowledge translation for any organization is crucial and I am honoured to help spread LearnFreely's message. I am so excited to be your Communication Outreach Coordinator for this year and am looking forward to what amazing things LearnFreely will accomplish!

Introducing Sarah Hawkins, Tutorial Coordinator for LearnFreely!

Hello, everyone! I'm currently in my fourth year at Memorial University of Newfoundland, pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Biology and Chemistry, alongside a Bachelor of Arts in French and Psychology. One of the highlights of my university journey has been my role as a PAL Leader for first-year Biology with MUN's Peer-Assisted Learning program. Here, I have the privilege of hosting interactive review sessions while guiding and supporting fellow students on their academic journey. Additionally, I serve as a Peer Mentor, providing assistance to other PAL Leaders, sharing insights, and offering advice on effective facilitation and learning strategies. There's nothing quite like helping students discover the learning strategies that work best for them and witnessing their success. My goal is to become a high school teacher and later transition into higher education. I take great pride in my volunteer work with organizations such as Girl Guides of Canada, Let's Talk Science NL, and MUN's Canadian Courage Project. In my downtime, I frequently explore my creative interests in painting, reading, and photography. I'm so excited to connect and contribute to the development of LearnFreely's tutorial program!

Introducing Mikela Rowsell, General Representative of LearnFreely!

Hi everyone! My name is Mikela Rowsell and I am a third-year chemistry student at Memorial University of Newfoundland. I am an undergraduate research student at Memorial with a focus on micro-/nanoplastic research. I enjoy playing various sports which includes and is not limited to ice hockey, softball and badminton! I am also an active member of the Glovertown Museum committee and the Communication Representative for the Memorial University Chemistry Society, along with a volunteer with MUN Relay for Life, I Love Me Campaign and a tutor for LearnFreely! I am delighted to be your General Representative for LearnFreely this year and I look forward to the term ahead!

Introducing Jason Wang, Co-Founder and COO of LearnFreely!

Hi! My name is Jason Wang and I am a first year Electrical & Computer Engineering student at the University of Toronto. I’m interested in the creation and application of new technologies within various sectors, and have explored this passion through continued research involvement with the National Research Council of Canada (NRC) where I am working to develop non-real time computer vision algorithms for sustainable monitoring of marine ecosystems. My interests have also branched out into other various fields leading to my involvement with the University of Toronto Formula Racing Team (UTFR) as well as UofT’s Quantitative Finance Lab.

LearnFreely was created after observing many students including myself struggle to adjust to the gap between high school and post-secondary. We look to provide high quality and accessible mentorships for young students in order to ease this transitional period and lay a stronger foundation for future learning.

Going through school, I’ve noticed that many students are unaware of how they should be approaching learning. Instead of learning concepts through well motivated examples and self discovery, education seems to promote rote memorization through unintuitive methods such as cramming or regurgitating information.

We look to address this problem and introduce a new perspective on learning. We teach techniques that successful students have used to maintain a high level of comprehension in their classes without relying on methods that shed a negative light on the act of learning. By doing so, we aim to not only help with success in a single course, but promote the development of everlasting skills that students can bring into any educational environment.

With lots of future ideas currently in the works, I as well as the rest of the team hope we can spread our message and provide these services all across the province!

Introducing Nicholas Qiu, Co-Founder and CEO of LearnFreely!

My name is Nicholas Qiu, and I am currently a third-year student pursuing a Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Chemistry at Memorial University. My goal is to continue my studies in medicine after completing my undergraduate degree. Additionally, I am an active researcher in the university’s organic lab, where I synthesize and characterize novel organic fluorophores.

Apart from my academic commitments, I am passionate about volunteering and actively engage with organizations such as the Health Science Centre, the Gathering Place, the NL School Chess Association, and Shallaway Youth Choirs.

During my free time, I enjoy various activities, including badminton, hiking, and playing the piano.

My motivation behind creating LearnFreely was to address the accessibility challenges of costly educational support programs and private tutoring. LearnFreely also emerged as a response to the educational challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, particularly the shift to online learning, which has impacted students' foundational knowledge.

LearnFreely's mission is to provide high-quality and accessible support to students by offering free one-on-one tutoring sessions and tutorial programs, helping students build essential skills and knowledge.

I am thrilled to be part of this dedicated team and eagerly anticipate collaborating with the community to expand our organization's reach, providing assistance to even more students in need.

LearnFreely offers tutoring for most high school courses and all STEM courses including AP and IB. Virtual options are also available for those interested.
