On September 1, 2022, NL introduced Canada’s first SSB tax. To measure its impact, we collected data on beverage consumption and demographics before the tax began to establish a baseline.

We’ve just completed our 1-year post-tax analysis, and the new paper will be available in pre-print and under review before the end of the year. Stay tuned! 📊📅

Canada's first sugar tax is here, with people in Newfoundland paying 20 cents per litre of pop Starting Sept. 1, Newfoundlanders and Labradorians will pay an extra 20 cents per litre on sugar-sweetened beverages like iced teas and pop.

The sugar tax came into effect on Thursday. Dr. Prowse and Dr. Harding were guests on CBC CrossTalk to discuss the tax and what effect it might have in NL.
