Join our special guest speaker Stephanie Ryan co-founder of The Menopause Foundation of Newfoundland and Labrador for our latest Well Now session. The emotional, psychological and cognitive impacts of the menopause transition are often unexpected and distressing. During this session participants will:

➡️Learn how hormones affect the brain and impact mental health.
➡️ Review symptoms such as brain fog, mood changes, memory/concentration difficulties, changes to self-image.
➡️Understand risk factors, the impact of lifestyle
➡️Learn about resources and management strategies

Stephanie Ryan is a social worker with 15 years of experience in the field of Mental Health and Addictions, and 10 years in various areas of health care.​

September 30th is National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. All Memorial libraries are closed on this day.
This week, both displays focus on Indigenous health and Indigenous-led health practices.

Check this out! Here is our newest display highlighting the history and legacy of the cottage hospital system in Newfoundland and Labrador. The very first cottage hospital opened in 1936 in Old Perlican. The final cottage hospital opened in Springdale in 1952.

This display also focuses on four physicians who were instrumental in the cottage hospital era, Dr. Ian Rusted, Dr. John Ross and Dr. Nigel Rusted. Dr. Ian and Dr. Nigel Rusted both served on coastal, medical ships, travelling the Labrador coast, providing medical assistance. Dr. John Ross worked at the Placentia Cottage Hospital.

There are a couple of cottage hospitals still in use or have been repurposed such as the Norris Point Cottage Hospital which now runs as the Old Cottage Hostel and Wellness Centre. It is remarkable to see this important building preserved and repurposed.

How neat is this! This is the exam table that sat in the medical home office of Dr. Nigel Rusted, Physician and Surgeon, known for his cleft lip/cleft palate repair. His home office was located on Monkstown Road in St. John's. The house still stands today. Dr. Rusted lived to be 104 years old. This will be on permanent display in the centre of the Health Sciences Library.
