Another excellent ATh course for anyone looking to exploring a vocational call to the diaconate, deepen their faith, or better equip their ministry.

This course with our chaplain Rev James Ravenscroft will explore what we mean by "spirituality" and how we live it out both personally and communally. Although focused on Christian spirituality, students will also learn about spiritual perspectives of other faith traditions. Content will be delivered with a combination of participation in weekly contemplative prayer, online discussion and personal study.

For Such a Time As This: A Survival Guide for Troubled Times
Free 10 Week Formation Seminar

We live in a time where we are bombarded with news of war, violence, and talk of might-makes-right from political leaders and commentators. There is a constant and intense fire hose of lies and misinformation streaming into the public domain. Fear and blame are wielded like a wedge to pry us apart from those we would deem enemies, even those who are our neighbours. There is a looming dread of what might come next, and whether our teetering institutions - political, economic, legal, religious – can stand up to it.

Then there are our own personal challenges: poor health, grief, mental health struggles, caring for a sick or aging loved one, the demands of parenting, just making ends meet. It’s enough to make us lose hope and give into despair. What does faith and spirituality have to offer in such a world? What kind of communities might we need to form in these uncertain times? What might the Christian tradition have to contribute, even as parts of that tradition are complicit in what is transpiring?

This seminar seeks to explore spiritual and physical self-care in a world of end-stage capitalism that evokes constant crises, reducing humans to data points and profit margins, all while destroying the land and relationships that make us truly human. It will also focus on building communities rooted in mutual-care and justice, communities that reflect a better way of being in the world, ones that emphasize right relationships with others, the land, and our other-than-human-relations. While the tools we will draw upon are mostly from the Christian tradition, we will also draw on other religious and spiritual traditions, the voices of marginalized and displaced peoples, and current information and best practices from the fields of psychology, social work, mental healthcare, and other related fields.

Our guide will be Hanna Reichel’s book, For Such a Time as This: An Emergency Devotional.

Another of our Associate in Theology (ATh) courses this Fall that is perfect for deacons and lay ministers, as well as professionals who regularly encounter people struggling with grief.

This course with Fr. Tony Bidgood is intended to introduce students to the concept of grief and bereavement. It will help them discover the individual and relational dynamics of grief, and recognize grief as a major source of stress. It will help develop an understanding of family-systems theory as a resource in pastoral ministry and situate grief and bereavement in the context of one’s faith journey and faith tradition.

Our Associate in Theology program is perfect for those discerning a call to the permanent diaconate in the Anglican diocese of Newfoundland and Labrador, those seeking post-secondary credits for admittance to our Bachelor of Theology Program, or for anyone who desires a deeper understanding of theology and ministry.

This course with Dr. Robert Hurley is a study of many of the prophets of the Old Testament. The course examines the political, economic, and religious context in which each prophet lived as well as how these factors shaped the prophet’s message. Special attention is given to certain elements of theology - in particular, the image or understanding of God that is
suggested by the prophet’s words and writings.

For some 27 years, Dr. Robert Hurley served as Professor of Biblical Studies and Catechetics at the Faculté de théologie et de sciences religieuses of Laval University. In recent years he retired and moved back home to St. John's. We’re honoured to have him join our adjunct faculty team.
