Thanks to MDA Space for stopping by the Student Design Hub yesterday and spending time with our student teams.

Teams from across the SDH had the opportunity to share the projects they’re working on, talk through their design process, and connect directly with professionals working in the space and technology sector.

Visits like this are a great opportunity for students to showcase their work, ask questions, and make connections between what they’re building now and where those skills can take them.

Thanks again to the MDA Space team for taking the time to visit and engage with our students.

💡 Myth vs. Fact: You Need Lots of Experience to Join an SDH Team

One common misconception about student design teams is that you need to already have extensive experience or technical skills to get involved.

The reality? You don’t need to be an expert.

Student Design Hub teams are opportunities to learn, gain hands-on experience, and develop skills by working on real projects alongside students from different programs.

Joining a team can help you:

🔹 Learn new skills through hands-on experience
🔹 Apply what you learn in the classroom
🔹 Work on real-world projects
🔹 Collaborate with students from different disciplines

Meet Iceberg ASV Memorial’s student-led autonomous surface vehicle team, supported by the Student Design Hub.

From mechanical design and electronics to software, fabrication, and testing, students take on every stage of designing, building, and operating their autonomous vessel.

This year, Iceberg ASV competed in the RoboBoat Competition presented by RoboNation, putting their design, engineering, and autonomous systems to the test against teams from around the world.

Through hands-on experience, students get the opportunity to solve real technical challenges, work across disciplines, and bring their ideas from the design stage to the water.

Built for the deep. Designed to explore. 🌊🤿

Meet Eastern Edge Robotics, Memorial’s student-led underwater robotics team, based out of the Marine Institute, Memorial University and supported by the Student Design Hub.

From mechanical design and electronics to software, fabrication and testing, students take on every stage of designing, building and operating their underwater vehicle.

This summer, Eastern Edge captured the MATE ROV Competition World Championship on home soil, competing against teams from around the world.

The team gives students the opportunity to apply engineering beyond the classroom, solve real technical problems, work across disciplines and put their designs to the test in international competition.

Student design. Real-world engineering. World-class results. 🌊🤖
