You and your students can be part of a research project and help support college student Shaylynn, who is conducting a survey for her Senior Thesis on emojis. She has been interested in ways different groups (ages, cultures, genders, etc.) interpret and use non-linguistic communication.

The purpose of this study is to gain a better understanding of how people use emojis. This survey consists of: one section about intentions behind emoji use, one section about patterns of emoji use, one section about personality, and demographic information. It will take around 10-15 minutes to complete.

BugQuest is a national citizen science initiative. Schools and community sites across Canada can apply to host an insect trap for a season, collecting samples of flying insects from spring to fall. There's no charge and all the supplies will be provided to the selected sites.

The insects are then identified using DNA barcoding to build a clearer picture of Canada’s insect biodiversity. The project connects hands-on field sampling with real biodiversity research, while allowing students and educators to contribute directly to national-scale science.

The 2025 Chemical Institute of Canada National Crystal Growing Competition is now open! High school students across Canada will compete to grow the biggest and best-quality alum crystal for a chance to win cash prizes.
NL has had some great success in recent years as we’ve had a student place third nationally two years in a row! We’d love to see even more local participation this year!
Teachers can now choose any four-week period (starting by Feb. 11, 2026) for students to grow their crystals. Once all submissions are in, the top two NL crystals will advance to the national competition.
Each crystal can be grown by up to two students using a maximum of 100 g of alum powder. Alum is easy to find — available from Boreal Scientific, Amazon, or even Bulk Barn.

Bring the 2025 Nobel Prize in Physics into your classroom.

The Nobel prize in physics was recently announced, highlighting the work of three scientists who investigated Quantum Tunnelling. This phenomenon is a puzzling one where quantum objects, like electrons, do not behave like classical objects, showing up where we do not expect them!
